For those interested in the grand scheme of things.

    Group 1

    Malta 0-1 Hungary
    Portugal 0-0 Albania

Albania were down to ten men for half the match too. Very poor result for Portugal who have also lost at home to Denmark.

    1 Denmark 7
    2 Hungary 7
    3 Portugal 5
    4 Albania 5
    5 Sweden 5
    6 Malta 0

Sweden and Denmark have games in hand. Portugal need to get their act together, and fast.

    Group 2

    Latvia 1-1 Israel
    Luxembourg 0-0 Moldova
    Greece 1-2 Switzerland

I'm surprised Switzerland got the win in Greece. Something for them after their disaster in losing to Luxembourg at home last time out.

    1 Greece 9
    2 Israel 8
    3 Switzerland 7
    4 Latvia 4
    5 Luxembourg 4
    6 Moldova 1

Greece still on top though. Luxembourg with 4 points!

    Group 3

    Czech Republic 1-0 Slovenia
    Slovakia 2-1 Poland
    Northern Ireland 4-0 San Marino

Slovakia scored two late goals in three minutes to overturn Poland's lead. Norn Iron get the job done.

    1 Slovakia 9
    2 Poland 7
    3 Slovenia 7
    4 Northern Ireland 4
    5 Czech Republic 4
    6 San Marino 0

Slovakia surprise leaders. The Czechs have a game in hand to catch up. Northern Ireland looking doomed already unless they win most of their remaining games.

    Group 4

    Russia 3-0 Finland
    Germany 1-0 Wales

Wales gave a good account of themselves but came cropper. Russia showing they are no one-tournament wonders. Should of got a draw in Germany their last game.

    1 Germany 10
    2 Russia 6
    3 Wales 6
    4 Finland 4
    5 Azerbaijan 1
    6 Liechtenstein 1

Germany looking to get away but the Russians may have something to say about it. Germany and Wales have played one more game than the rest.

    Group 5

    Bosnia 4-1 Armenia
    Estonia 0-0 Turkey
    Belgium 1-2 Spain

Turkey showing their away day jitters. Belgian plans were undone by an 88th minute Villa goal. They had taken the lead early in the match.

    1 Spain 12
    2 Turkey 8
    3 Belgium 7
    4 Bosnia 6
    5 Estonia 1
    6 Armenia 0

Spain should be well able to top this group from here. Belgium likely to be the only challengers to Turkey for the 2nd place finish.

    Group 6

    Croatia 4-0 Andorra
    Belarus 1-3 England

Faves do the business although England were pegged back to 1-1 earlier in their game.

    1 England 12
    2 Croatia 7
    3 Ukraine 7
    4 Belarus 3
    5 Kazakhstan 3
    6 Andorra 0

Bar slip-ups England should go on to win the group after winning in Croatia. Ukraine and Belarus have a game in hand so Croatia need to get the better of Ukraine next time out.

    Group 7

    Lithuania 1-0 Faroe Islands
    Austria 1-3 Serbia

Faroe Islands putting up good shows of themselves lately. Serbia bring Austria crashing back down to earth. What were France thinking when they lost in Vienna?

    1 Serbia 9
    2 Lithuania 9
    3 Austria 4
    4 France 4
    5 Romania 4
    6 Faroe Islands 1

France and Romania have games in hand. One of them or Serbia will miss out on even a play-off, but who? Austria and Lithuania should fade away.

    Group 8

    Georgia 0-0 Bulgaria
    Ireland 1-0 Cyprus
    Italy 2-1 Montenegro

    1 Italy 10
    2 Rep of Ireland 7
    3 Bulgaria 3
    4 Montenegro 2
    5 Georgia 2
    6 Cyprus 1

We all know the story here. Georgia and Italy have played one game more than the rest.

    Group 9

    Norway 0-1 Netherlands
    Iceland 1-0 Macedonia

Nice wins for Iceland and the Dutch in the little group.

    1 Netherlands 9
    2 Scotland 4
    3 Iceland 4
    4 FYR Macedonia 3
    5 Norway 2

Iceland have played one game more than the rest. The Dutch rampant and seemingly unstoppable from here. The Scots are in a fair position. Norway tend to play better away from Oslo than in it.

Not European I know but a WC qualifier all the same.

    Australia 4 - 0 Qatar

Great performance from a team missing the likes of Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, Mark Bresciano and Vince Grealla. Two goals from Brett Emerton (one penalty) and one each from Tim Cahill and Josh Kennedy.

I saw Arshavin's goal for Russia against Finland. Danced his way through and slotted home. Another beauty to add to his collection.

What was the make-up of the Socceroo squad?

Many from the A-League in it?

Do they play all of their games in Brizzie?

Serbia keeps playing fantastic lately,i am so impressed,it seems we finally got the coach who made them to show their true performance in national team, fantastic game against tough Austria,we blasted them and it looked like we gonna score 10 times till the end of the game, but coach was the smart one so he didnt want to risk injuries in 2nd half so we played one boring half time but still with a lot of chances and Austrians scored after first strike they had,i am really looking forward to next games and if we keep playing like this 1st even spot wont be far

Portugal are pretty much fooked tbh :( - they'd need to basically win nearly all of their remaining matches or hope Denmark and Sweden start slipping up, they have got 2 points from the last 3 games when really they should have 7 and an absolute minimum of 5. I watched most of the second half and to be fair though Albania weren't total pushovers they dominated most of it and but for a combination of poor finishing and narrow misses and some good saves from the Albania keeper they would have won comfortably.

But luck is a major factor in Soccer and it's just not going Portugal's way - with a lot of the crowd booing going on last night I think the Portuguese manager's Carlos Queiroz reign might be a short lived one unless things turn around dramatically. Anyway at least the luck is on Ireland's side :), here's hoping it continues.

Yeah Portugal destroyed my accumulator alright. Has Ireland, England, Holland, Spain, Germany, Croatia, Portugal...

Have to agree that Portugal are in trouble alright, really need to start picking up their performances or we wont be seeing them in South Africa...

Not a European one but Mexico drew 2-2 with Canada, which could have been a serious disaster, if they had have won they were guaranteed to go through. Luckily though Honduras slipped up against Jamaica and lost 1-0 so Mexico went top of the group, now they have to beat/draw with Honduras away to progress from their regional qualifier.

There are a few A-League players in the squad but not sure if any played last night.

The games are being split between Sydney and Brisbane at the moment. Feckers won't bring one over here

Congrats to Serbia. Going by their recent results they look like they are a real good team.
