    Hi Everyone,
I'm intending to apply for the H.Dip through Irish in Galway this year. I know that there is an oral assesment/interview for this...but what do they ask? And is there also a written assesment?
Is teaching experience essential? I've always been told that with my subjects (Maths, Irish) that I'd have no problem getting jobs buts thats just not happening!!! I've handed in my CV to schools to build up my teaching hours but have got absolutely nothing!!! apparently I'ts not what you know but who you know!!!
If anyone has any advice or is in the same situation as me I'd be so grateful to hear from ye!!!!

    Hi,

I didn't do the dip through Irish but I know a good few people who did. There is a written test as well as the oral and from what I was told, it's pretty basic.

Teaching experience isn't essential. Having experience may add on points to your total when you are applying, depending on how many hours experience you have, but it certainly isn't essential. I didn't have any experience before my dip last year and am now teaching full-time. (I, like you, have Irish as one of my subjects and there seemed to be plenty of jobs for Irish teachers over the last few months.) Of course some experience could be helpful in terms of becoming comfortable in the classroom so keep trying.

Keep trying different schools. Make them aware that you are available and try to meet with the principals if possible.

Did the Irish Dip myself, mind you it was 8 years ago! The oral exam is basic enough, think they just want to make sure you're not chancing your arm. If you can speak it you're grand. The written paper had a few translations on it, but that may have changed. There are far fewer people applying for this course, so you have a good chance and with 2 core subjects, you'll be very employable.

Did the Dip through Irish four years ago. Don't worry about the assessment of your Irish. There's an oral and a written section but I suspect that it goes almost entirely on the oral because my written was pretty poor (Irish is not one of my subjects so my written grammer isn't great but my spoken Irish is fine).

The course seems pretty easy in comparison to what I've heard about the course through english and the qualification is the same so I'd say go for it and don't worry about your level of Irish. If you're able to teach Irish, your Irish is definitely good enough to do the course.
