Best of luck to Dara, an animal over the longer distances and came into his own over the ultra distances. Looking forward to his report - last one on Raheny website was brilliant.

And another one doing a 24hour in London this weekend (me :D). Good luck to Daragh and the rest of the team. It'll be particularly interesting to see if Thomas McGuire can bring his amazing 100km form up into the longer event.

good luck to both the 24 hour'ers this weekend.
    Enduro,
Have you done "time" races before? mentally, how tough is it to keep a descent pace when you know you're going to be out there for X amount of time rather than the quicker-I-run-the-quicker-I-finish of traditional races?

Best of luck Enduro. Dara's account on the last one he did was one of the most amazing things I ever read. When I read about the burst toe, and the kidney damage etc, that people get, it simultaneously made me think that I'd love to try it, to push myself so far, but also that I think I'd just drop out at the thought of that hellish pain.

    Enojy!

Enduro broke the Irish 24hour record with a run of over 230k! Well done, that's amazing running!

Thanks for the good wishes. Much appreciated.

Dara is indeed a great writer. I'm always amused everytime I read that account. Brings back some great memories of a great trip.
    Enduro,

That was my 5th 24 hour race. They're the only "time" races I've run so far. Pacing is of course key in ultra running. I've got a very good sense of pace, and its probably the biggest factor in my ultra-running abilites. I do pacing on "feel". I'll start a race knowing how hard I can allow myself to push, and how to vary the pace over time (if at all).

Mentally the toughest part is actually to race your own race optimally, and not get involved in tactical battles (particularly if, like me, you love the mental aspect of racing). Strategic pacing (and racing) is very much required.

I suppose it is a bit harder knowing that no matter how fast you run you've still got the same ammount of time left. But of course time is just another parameter to mull over in you head as you're running around (and there is a lot of mulling time in a 24 hour race!). I play lots of mental games with myself to make the time pass more easily, such as the obvious one of breaking the 24 hours into stages (In my race last weekend this was made easier as they reverse the direction every 4 hours, giving 6 very definite stages to the race)

Fabulous achievement! Well done on your records! Quick question, how much has the mountain running (as apposed road racing) contributed to your exceptional endurance?

Congrats Enduro. I am in awe... Makes me feel like getting up off the sofa and going for a long run, even though I shouldn't..

I'm having trouble getting off the couch myself at the moment!

I'm not sure that it contributes too much to endureance really. But it is important for endurance over hills (like my recent Wicklow way run). And it definitelty helps in toughening up, both physically and mentally.

However I reckon that cycling, for example, would have made a much bigger contribution.
