Buying a projector stateside

    Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone has some good recommendations for buying projectors in the US?

My girlfriend is travelling over in a few weeks and I've always heard the old "if you know someone going to the States you'll get a much better deal..." when it comes to technology. Is it really much cheaper to buy over there?

I'm currently looking at the Optoma HD65 but also like what I've read about Infocus machines. Although I haven't been too comprehensive I have to say... Any others I should check out?

My budget is around 1k (euro) and for that I'd like to get a screen & ceiling mount too if possible (will get those myself from here - don't think her suitcase would appreciate that... :)).

Any advice on purchasing in the States (stores, websites, personal experience) would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers.

You might run into some warranty issues buying in to US. Not sure is Optoma Europe will cover a PJ bought outside europe.

There's alot of bad press going around about Optoma USA's warranty issues.

    Cheers jmal,

Decided against buying the States in the end. Couple of reasons - 1) couldn't really find any deals that couldn't be matched in Europe (thomann, etc.); 2) could be serious hassle if I did need to use customer service.

Also I'm not sure if a HD projector is something I really need. A lot of the stuff I'll be watching will be downloads or films that won't really benefit from HD. Thinking of scaling back on the projector spec (dropping the HD) and putting the extra money into a good set of speakers.

    Thanks again for your feedback.
