Can anyone help me with regards sinuses? I suffer real bad from them, all year round Ive a blocked/runny nose and I seem to get the flu and colds every so often and find it hard to shake them off.

Its coming to a stage were its really p***ing me off.

If any one knows or can recommend of any specialist to go see?

I used to suffer desperately with them, so here's a few tips that have worked for me:

Avoid dairy. Like the plague. I know you are not really supposed to cut out any food group from your diet, but I did and I believe it was the one thing that gave me most relief. And I love all things dairy. :(

As much as it pains me to say it, avoid wheatey beers. The likes of Heineken, German beers, Belgian beers. Wines and spirits do not affect me in the way those beers do (well, from a sinus perspective, ahem).

Sleep in a well-ventilated room. Don't have it warm and stuffy.

If you do get a flare-up, I find a heat patch over the forehead works wonders. I have this thing that is like a mini-beanbag. You heat in the microwave for a minute or two and place it on your forehead for 5-10 minutes. Also works for hangovers, believe it or not. :)

As for medical stuff, Sinex and sinutab are your friend.

I used to find some wines really set my sinuses off. I think it's something to do with the sulphites.

Anyways, last time I got a bad bout of it, I tried acupuncture. Now it does involve taking a few needles in the face, but it's not sore, and I found it worked.

I'm a martyr to the sinuses too - and I refuse to give up beer or dairy, or wine for that matter.

I get relief using a Neti-Pot which is an ayurvedic treatment. You can buy a neti pot for about £6 on eBay.

Basically it involves rinsing your sinuses with slightly salty water (slightly salty water ensures that there's no stinging sensation). You can see demonstrations on Youtube etc.

I use it every day and it has definitely improved things. G/f even says I snore a lot less now!

I suffred really badly, had surgery, avoided wine, dairy, nuts basically anything that I thoght could cause it and any amount of crap sprayed up my nostrils and nothing helped.

I only ever seemed to be ok when on hols, and I always put it down to the drier air. Until it dawned on me that the one thing that was always different about being on hols, and at home, was drinking loads of water. So started drinking loads of water, and haven't had a single problem since, as long as I keep drinking it.

Started off with about 3 - 4 pints before lunch for a few weeks, and maybe up to 7 pints total by the end of the day. Have that down to 2 pints before lunch and maybe another 2 - 3 by the end of the day.

Might be something worth trying, given how cheap water is, and how effective it seems to be at the moment.

I suffered too, for about 18 months, colds, runny nose... it would clear up for a few weeks, then come back again....

doctor sent me for an CT scan, and found my sinus's were very badly infected.. then went to see consultant in the black rock clinic, turned out i had polips... had them removed 2 years ago, never looked back... its completely changed me, I was able to go back the gym etc and i'm just preparing to run the marathon on monday

Apparently quite common and I'm not old ( well not really old :o )

Mine were quite bad, they actually started to become visible when one looked up ones nose . The surgeon actually said to me when i initially went to see him "you don't need to be a doctor to see them!!!"

I suffer with sinus trouble also & have a large red lump in my right nostril (very visible).Had to go & get a CT scan done & I was told it was just a lump of tissue so a polyp I presume?! The doc told me to leave it be coz the operation wasn't the best to go through. What u think? Is there a long waiting list to get it done?

PS - I am in my mid twenties so not that old either :)

It may well not be a polyp, they are usually grey/red in colour... polyps have a blood supply and get bigger over time, so they usually remove them, as far as i know.

The recovery from the operation wasn't great, but mine was a bad case... If you had the CT scan and they don't think they need to be removed i'd leave them.

Mine were very bad, were almost completely stopping me breathing... I didn't have a major wait for the operation as i'm in the VHI and paid the excess for the black rock clinic.... I think it was about a 4 week wait....

I've actually found that Manuka honey helps a bit. It's very good for the throat as well.

I'd recommend avoiding cafinated drinks as well; ever since i gave up coffee, i've found my sinuses much better!

As someone else pointed out, drinking lots of water really helps as well and is good for you in so many other ways.

I had sinusitis and hay fever and panick attacks caused by interaction between Ventolin and Caffeince causes CNS distrubances (anxiety) and I think it also increases you IGE levels mine were 2400 compared to average 100 men have more IGE than women so are more prone to it. Had many years of annoyance over this if it works for you tell your GP.
