    Apparently yes ... http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=55157974#post55157974

Whether it's a sensible thing to do or not (as opposed to the purely legal aspects), I'll leave as an exercise to the reader, as they say. Personally, I wouldn't though.

Towing on a motorway is illegal with the exception of removing a broken down vehicle of the motorway and only as far as the next exit. For transporting a broken down car using motorways you'll have to use a purpose built recovery van/truck or a trailer.

You presumably would be going too slow to be on a motorway anyway!

You'd also need an EB licence.

There are certain sections of the M50 under construction where they will tow your car for free. :)

This post belongs in the "Bargain Alerts" forum, something free in Ireland

That would depend on the vehicle used to tow.

Talked to a guy in a towing company last month about this.

Its illegal and the car(s) can be confiscated and there is a guarda that allegedly does confiscate cars for this.

They do not exactly tow your cars for free. It is towed to the toll bridge. Then it waits ther for an indeterminatet amount of time(depending on how busy they are) and is towed to a place past bray. It then gets a charge of 180 euro for towing applied. If you get lucky and get it before its towed to bray it is free.

You appear to presume that all broken down vehicles are travelling southbound!

nope they do the same no matter what direction. Previous vehicle that was towed was heading northbound and thats what happened it.
