    Hey,
Im in GMIT and them internet filters are so anoying, but ive seen people around me on what would be restricted sites (bebo & such). Ive tried all the proxy bypass sites i can find and none of them work, well. Just wondering how people are accessing these sites, any advice appreciated. :)

They are blocked for a reason. Use of bebo/facebook/myspace is a waste of college resources.

Ah but some of the filters are just ridiculous. Just block bebo and other troublesome sites. It gets irritating when I can't view HTML code tutorials on websites because "score = -300" or whatever.

Totally agree, but their are always ways and means to get whats required on the college network.

Get your own internet 3g broadband is pre-pay and cheap is now. About as fast as GMIT two.

Instant bypass that wont get you in trouble kicked out of college. Ruin your life and end up as a heroin addict or ladyboy.

If you look up Arrays in the Java API its blocked. Don't even know how thats possible but there you go.

There are some proxies that aren't blocked but if you have a laptop I'd just use the various wireless connections around the college as most of them are unblocked.

Cool thanks for the feedback guys. Will be getting a laptop soon so ill just use the wireless ^^

and 3g as fast as the GMIT connection? i hope not thats false for GMIT's sake

Have a look and see for yourself what type of connection the IT has Link.

I have previously gotten speeds of 1.5 to 2.0Mbs up to servers out side the HEAnet network.

Download the java doc's and save yourself the hassle.

The wireless is less restrictive, but if students carry on the way certain students did last year with the wireless [downloading 100+ GBs from rs]. Then this will change to.

CR labs didn't have much restrictions 2 years ago, don't know about now
However, your only supposed to use those computers if your doing the likes of software dev.

Is there any infomation on the gmit website about how to access the wi-fi, hotspots etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,719 ✭✭✭ARGINITE

    Depends on the wireless.

The one in the canteen requires your normal user name and password [last time I used it anyways], the same in the library and reception of the new building.

The wireless in the engineering department, I'm not sure what the status is with that as I had it down over the summer and when I did bring it back up it had security enabled.

for GMITgw, its just your user name, G00XXXXX and pass, it's captive portal, so you may need IE to get the login page, as regards restriction, i think it is in a separate vlan behind a separate box so different policy's. In any case allot of content is block.

the speed depends on a few things, as far as i'm aware the filter box is behind a 100Mbit interface so it can only push about 80Mbit's of traffic and then you've got the filter end which pushes BW down more.

In any case i don't understand why they don't relax the access as in NUIG it's almost all open, and people just tell you to get off the computer if you just messying around on the internet, + it saves time too, if you need something fast, you get is real fast!

i find the gmit net to be fast enought to not frustrate you... Althou some security is a bit overboard. if your on some forums and you try open a topic with a swear word in any post it wont allow you too.... i mean cmon were nto in primary school anymore..

living in gleann na ri right now and the security they have is pushing retarded... they have blocked all ports and only opened a minor few which allows you to use webpages. 1 or2 instant messengers and almost nothing else. no games, no downloads(which i can understand), but many useful programs are blocked from use... I.E FTP programs like filezilla which i use regularly cause its part of my course... gmit internet is fine in comparison to this crap

Http and FTP downloads work fine in Gleann Na Ri.

Access in NUIG can't be faulted. The wired connection in the pc suites is always consistently fast (though getting a pc) in the liberry might be an issue. Most ports are open. No steam though. Shame.
Wireless access is still surprisingly quick despite a hundred odd laptops using it at once in the liberry. And rapidshare is a dream early in the morning and late in the evening.

Back to the topic, Bebo and the likes are a waste of resources especially around exams time, in the IT centre and Library, but I think that the wireless network - at least - should be opened up. I'm in 3rd year computing, and I cannot access webservers via FTP and cant even open MSN on my own laptop!! I completely agree that the comps in the IT centre and library should be restricted..but the wireless restricted for personal laptop use is a bit much. On a seperate note.. 3rd year software and digi media have exams starting tomo and, our computer labs (cr1,2,3,4,5) were locked all day today and the library was closed at 5.00. Are they taking the piss... I dont think that would go on anywhere else in this country. How are you supposed to a sit a JAVA exam when the labs your working on all year are closed the week before your exam....?? Cheers folks.

Did you ask any of the building staff to open the labs?

May if you talk to the head of the course they could sort you out with a key for your lab, it has been done in other courses for years.

Regarding opening up the wireless for general use:
Their was a rumor floating around last year [just before the wireless was taken off line] that some ass of a student had downloaded 250GB over the wireless. After talking to other people close to the IT department it became clear that it wasn't a rumor. It is stuff like this that causes the IT department to close/filter our internet access.

I came across this by chance.

Certainly, if people spend hours wasted in just chatting on the Internet while they should be working there is reason to block this activity. However, the contemporary workplace is a mystery to me as workers are increasingly treated like children.

Facebook in particular is very efficient in its used of e-mail and would be an asset in any business. I find it quicker than the other systems and I never get spam, as sometimes happens with Hotmail.

Employers might do worse than see how they might benefit from the social networking systems that are there, rather than cutting them off out of fear of the unknown.

Facebook might be an asset to business, but GMIT is not a business and with limited IT resources social networking is a waste of these resources.

Are you sure you're using the right proxies for the wireless connections?

192.168.1.200:3128 is for the DublinRD and Omni one anyway. Slow as shit though

Yea, we asked the building staff and they couldnt do anything for us. The technicians office was closed aswell. Good idea about getting a key sorted for us but i'd say they will be open freely from monday. Our exams started much earlier this year for some strange reason, but maybe they forgot to keep the library and especially our labs open just before the exams. Ridiculous.

My god, downloading 250G is just insane.. I hope the guy was caught.
