Grant / Student budget

    Hey All,

So I am not a mature student however, I have been working since I left school, about 3-4 years and intend to start studying next September.

So I need to save, save, save. Anyone any notion of how much it would cost to do a first time around 4 yr degree? Will be living in Cork, and obviously would love to live on my own in a studio as I am not particularly into the whole student lifestyle...

Also, I don't get this, I have lived abroad for about 10 years, but remain an Irish Citizen obviously. My parents also lived abroad (but mother is Irish), but they worked for over 25 years paying huges taxes in Ireland and apparently neither myself nor mysister are entitled to a grant? Can anyone shed some light on this and make my day by tellin me this is false and explain how to get around it?

    Thanks for any response!

If you are living abroad for the year that you will be means tested then they have no way of verifying your income.
As they would not have access to revenue systems of another country.

No I have been living abroad for the past 9 years but intend on coming to Cork in the next 1-2 months to work. So I'll have 6-9 months of work under my belt.

Apparently, grant is calculated and decided on your earnings if you are not living at home (my case), so would that mean it would depend on how much I earn, how long I have been working in Ireland? Or is that false info anyway?

yeah if you are not living at home its calculated on your means not the parents. the levels of income to get the grant was changed by the government back during the summer but the actualy levels of the grants have not changed for last year and this and neither again for next which is ridiculous cause it means i get less and less with inflation but at least i get away with teh increased captitation fees. i think that every local council/vec also has slightly different rules/criteria too so you have to apply to your local normally. im not really sure what to do in your case.
