WD want me to send the broken one back though with all my data on it.

    Is there anyway around this?

    Thanks.

What do you mean by 'way around'?

If you have sensitive data that you don't want leaving your possession, you can simply not send it back, i.e. foreit your warranty and buy your own replacement.

If you are afraid about losing data, you will need to use the service of a data recovery agent authorized by WD. This is not part of your WD warranty, so you'll pay for it; however, you are still entitled to a replacement drive after the data recovery agent is finished with it. (of course, you can try to recover the data yourself, but that is a whole other post in itself)

Prevention is the best action in both cases unfortunately. Encrypt any sensitive data, and back up all important data - NEVER use any drive as the sole storage location of important data.

Basically I just don't want anyone else to have the data. Not too worried about losing it but not sure what's on there.

Well what exactly do you mean by broken?

It's an external drive so are you sure it's the drive? or could it just be the power supply or case connections?

Have you tried removing the drive from the housing & connecting it to a computer as a slave (Or caddy it)?

Just reading over my op there and I realize it's far from clear. I only had a few seconds to post that yesterday as I was busy.

The drive seems to be broke. It will connect to the machine ok (usb) but will crash explorer if you try to go into the drive and says "the format cannot complete" if you try that. I tried formatting it on three computers.

I think it affects the warranty if you take the drive out of the casing on these. All I wanted to know is "do you have to send the broken" one back.

I sent it back anyway though as it had to go yesterday.

I seem to have had a pretty bad experience with WD Externals.

I have have 2 of them die on me, one where the whole thing was
broken including the internal drive and then the replacement to
that drive also malfunctioned. I ended up taking out the drive
and using it as an internal drive instead. (which is working fine now)

Due to this and general problems with friend's drives also I now hate
these externals. Taking out the drive doesn't void the warranty as
I took out the first drive and put it back in and they approved RMA
    on that one.
