While strictly speaking neverwinter nights isn't a traditional role playing game. It is played on the PC but i know a fair few people here (myself included) have played the game before so id value the advise.

I'm strongly considering getting back into module building for NWN. i haven't actually played NWN2 yet and im hold off as I've herd its buggier than mad buggs mcbug winner of the most buggiest game in all of bugsville.

in short i herd its terrible,

I saw Rev's thread about running a new game of nwn (i haven't replied yet rev cos im still trying to find my NWN installation disks) and that got me thinking do people still play NWN now that NWN2 is out? and which would be better to design new game modules for? NWN or NWN2?

    I won't play NWN2 simple as.

I much prefered NWN1, NWN2 was very high spec so my machine ran it very jumpily, and I simply didn't find it as much fun as 1

Thats the impression i got. while NWN2 has so many show stopping bugs in it allot of people will play NWN1 until all the problems in NWN2 are resolved (if that ever comes about).

Right so i'll have to dig out my install disks and the expansion disks so install it again. Unless someone else can provide me with a good reason to pick NWN2 over NWN's i'll get cracking on some modules.

    dragon mountain anyone :-)

I've tried building modules in NWN2. The toolset is awfully restrictive, it won't let me do what I want, it takes a decent working knowledge of C to get the simplest script to work and it's prone to crashing in the same way alcoholics are prone to having a little drink.

I must say I prefer NWN to NWN2.

Well good news is i found my NWN manual/CD key that i bought. Bad news is i cant find the install CD's so i'll just download the installation media and use my legit CD key that i bought with the game to play.

Thanks for the advise, from reading various reviews and such it seems that NWN2 is far from perfect so i'll just install NWN again and start playing/building mods for it.

I'm exactly in the same boat as you, pulled the cd-keys from the install on my old PC, but my discs have vanished into the mists of time =(

The Funny thing is i have a legit CD key for NWN1 and the original CDs and keys for both expansion packs but i just cant seem to find the install disks for NWN. So im downloading them in iso format. hopefully should do the trick.

I hear there are still quite a few NWN1 Persistent worlds still running so i might have a google at one of them. I do play WoW allot tho so its not like im gonna start playing NWN1 online again for any great amount of time

Id love to play NWN2 with Rev and the guys but i've had a look at the system specs and my PC wont run it im afraid. Oh well im relegated to playing NWN1 for a while. Still i can keep myself amused for module building for a while until WoTLK comes out :D:D:D

cheers for the advise guys I've gone with NWN1

I got a storyline all drawn up, the first few basic tilesets are built (needs major tidying up) but I'm stuck researching scripting I forgot how irritating that was the bioware site is a major help tho.

Is there anyplace i can upload it when I'm done for feedback?

I'm beginning to harbour a secret love for you.

    NWN1 > NWN2

nwn2 I aited and waited and waited for it but it sucked so majorly. Get the first one + expansions and then get yourself stuff like the Community Expansion Project add ons. Good craic they are.

You can put it up there. If you put a link to it here and I've gotten my computer issues sorted, I'd be happy to give feedback on it =)

Like you guys I too disliked nwn2 when it first came out and found it as buggy as it gets.

However I recently decided to give it one more go and I havent stopped playing it, been playing through all 3 exapansions at the moment.

The new patches that have been deployed have made the game on par with nwn1.

Nearly all elements that made the game unplayable from what I can see are sorted.

Game play is smooth and I havent had any framerate issues with it, even with water reflections turned on.

I sampled a few persistent worlds aswell and some of them are not bad, even avalis now have there nwn2 world online.

Its taken a few years but I feel they might have finally gotten it to a stage where it gets the thumbs up.

My pc isnt too high spec'd either.

    Pentium D 950
    2gb's of ram
    8800GT Graphics card.
    Winxp

So I'd recommend patching up and giving it another go.. I think you might be surprised as to how far its come along.

My only gripe with the game though is that they never released a linux server for it.

Cheers for the info mate will do, tho i admit the project is dead in the water at the moment fallout 3 has consumed me!!

once i get fallout out of my system i'll start the level design again.

for compiling and baking though you need some nice overhead on your CPU. So an older machine will have trouble.

I tired module building and i give up. I cannot even get an onenter script to work. And nwn2 is that uninspiring that one wouldnt bother.

While it is **playable** after about 20 patches it's what it **should** have been on release. I hate rushed releases.

Allot of games these days are rushed releases and desperately need patching only weeks after there released. I agree with you there its really really fething annoying and it always happpens to RPG games too, I finally finished fallout 3 and went back to my project. In fact NWN's is actually quite a joy to work with. Its quite easy to build a level and bioware's site is very useful for scripting information.

I assume your talking about NWN2 when you say you need some nice overhead on your CPU in order to compile modules. As NWN1 runs quite well on my PC and my PC is at least 4 years old at this point.

i tried NWN2 on my PC and its very sluggish so i just switched back to NWN but from what i saw i must say i liked the game.

I still think nothing was as bad as the game abortion which was Vampire:bloodlines that was release and sold.

Even after the patches you and to crack the game to get at the console
and hard command line jump to a place further along as to try exit the level
at the appointed place crashed the game to desktop and corrupted the saved game.

So do more people code in NWN or NWN2?

I only have vanilla NWN i have the expansion packs somewhere i need to dig em out. As they have vital patch info and extra tile sets. Im only working with the basic tile sets and for what i have planned it makes the scenario bland to be honest. So for now my project is on hold. I actually have another idea for a total conversion of an online game to a NWN module (I'm not sure about copyright tho)

until i get those expansion packs installed again my modules building days are over :(

I enjoy NWN2 but I like to play MP with my wife and there is so little MP content out there for it, it is all PW.
NWN had plenty and I assume it is because it is so much easier to script for.

well a week later and I have to say I have been enjoying the single player, as you can see from my xfire sig. Its not a huge improvment over the old game but has enough to keep me coming back for more. I never finished the first game so I might try to beat the 2nd game. Pity there is little in the way of multi-player for it out now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

The biggest problem with NWN2 for multi player is that unlike NWN1 you do not have free reign. In the official campaigns you can only be in the same room/area as your party and if there is a conversation you can not do anything until it is over.

Some MP games get around the conversation thing but you are still limited to where you can be where as in NWN1 when we all played on the boards server we could be all over the place doing different things.

Again a PW environment solves this...

Yes I fondly recall many nights playing NWN on the boards.ie servre we got all the mods we wanted loaded up and we played them into the weee hours.

I dunno T, I agree that it was epic buggy but nothing as bad as NWN2. Though when the bugs occured they were irritating - sometimes you didn't get a key you needed, or it wouldn't work or an area transition wouldnt occur or something plain STUPID.

Edit I'd like to point out that I've never had luck with NWN. When I bought it orignally it woudlnt run despite having the right spec. It was only years later when I had my current machine (a beast at the time) that I could play it AND ENJOY IT!! WOO! So I expect that it will be the same for NWN2.

Also where were the whips ? I wanted my Bastard Sword & Whip wielding Blackguard!

When/If I get made permanent and I have the funds to buy an uber pooter then I might try NWN2 again but to be honest I rather things like the thief games and deus ex. Maybe I'm stuck in the past?

As it happens i got my bro's copy of NWN2 last week and installed it on my PC (patched it n all) was sluggish as h3ll. I didnt even bother going online with it, from what i saw i liked it wasn't all that buggy to be honest its not as bad as galaxies NGE buggy but then my PC was so slow playing it im not sure id have noticed em anyway.

I switched back to NWN again and im playing a persistent world atm (even tho i have and play WoW Id still play NWN online)

so there you go id like to give NWN2 a go on a decent machine but for now im stuck with NWN1 ..... and WoW

My machine runs nwn2 just fine but i still dont like it, i went back to nwn1 myself there last year and still play it occasionally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,571 ✭✭✭✭Frisbee

    I don't have a machine capable of running NWN2.

However two weeks ago I got an e-mail from the very first PW I was a member of saying they were re-opening it so I started playing again.
