Make sure it's 9.5mm high and not 12.5mm as the 12.5mm drives won't fit.

I have the Samsung 500gig, it's quiet, and very fast installing games, especially large demos. The fact it's only 5400rpm and only 8meg cache make hardly any odds as the high density platters on it level peg it in read/write performance with 7200rpm jobs. Supposed to have highish access times though but never noticed it loading levels. Paid around 140 euro for it on MemoryC before the prices rocketed. Ignore the fact it's SATA 3Gbps with 300MB/Sec data transfer as the SATA interface on the PS3 is half that again which also doesn't matter as these drives are limited by their mechanicals and hardly ever push 100MB/Sec anyway.

A highly commendable post Flaccus. But I think it might have been information overload for an OP that's not too technical. :D

Yeah a simple "samsung 500GB = better than sex" probably would have sufficed. :pac:

sorry OP for weirding out :-) the samsung or wd 500gig drives are both ace. and be careful of the flimsy ps3 drive screws, especially the blue one..use a decent philips with plenty of torque with a tight grip and yer laughin. youl'l know when you insert the head if its up to the job if it grips tightly..lol
