    Laughing at above image :)

TBH there's not a whole pile between them. In the end it comes down to personal preference and who you know you can borrow stuff from ;) Try both in a shop..

I'm a Nikon man myself, but i like Canon too,TBH it's rare either brand bring out a dud SLR,but looking strickly at 350d .vs D60 I can't think why anyone would buy a 3 year old camera over one thats current

    better lens on the D60
newer sensor design so i'd imagine better noise handling
    far better LCD screen

Yep, have to agree with sinead.

A few years ago a would have said Canon in a heartbeat. These
days I would be quite happy with either.

Only complaint I would have is the higher price for Nikon Glass.

I am in the Nikon Camp, but either SYSTEM is good. Both have things where they are slightly better than the other, but they are quite minor points really. They both do the major stuff very well.

I wouldn't rule out the used DSLR option either. Really good to learn on. If you get it on the Bay then you are taking a bit more of a gamble. One of the problems is that people who upgrade in a System will often only be selling the Body as they keep their lenses.

    Good luck.

Whats your budget? I'd recomment a 450d, it's an upgraded form of the 350d but it's still the same class of camera. Ebay linky from a very reliable seller...

    You can with CANON :)

    cheesey I know.

It's well worth considering the other systems (Pentax, Olympus and Sony), unless you're intending to go pro. They share the majority of the same third party (Tamron, Sigma) lenses with N+C, which are often the best value anyway.

Pentax probably do the best primes in the business if that's your area.

thanks for the info and advice, seems to be kinda half and half with a nod in the direction of the other brands...

its probably just going to be a hobby, cant really say yet...
    no clear winner i suppose...

    cheers

I just want to say, as a Nikon user, I really appreciate Canon gear.

It's not that I know too much about the Canon System, but I don't need to. The thing is that the R&D guys at Nikon do know every detail & with them being their biggest competition it keeps them on their toes. Of course the same happens the other way too.

Healthy competition between the two major systems mean better gear for us :D

That is why I like Canon.

I'd go for Canon as even the pros in Pro Evo Soccer use the famous white L lenses. :pac:

That's only because Canon payed for the product placement :p

You should buy whatever you're most comfortable with.
    Go into a shop.
Get a model within you price range, then ask for the equivalent model from the rival brand.
Play around with them & see what suits you best.

    Ask Ken Rockwell

"If you don't have the time to read the rest of this page, you want a Nikon D40." :pac:

I agree with city-exile. Go into the shop, ask for the Canon and Nikon in your price range and get the one your prefer handling. Canon do have a slight edge in the low end of the market at the moment with live view and their 14 bit sensors (which haven't trickled down to the low end Nikons yet), but other than that it's anyone's game.

I would avoid Ken Rockwell like the plague - the man is a loony and frankly hasn't much idea of what he's talking about. He is right sometimes, but I wouldn't trust his opinion in general as far as I could throw it.

    Just my .02c.

    Cheers,
    Peter

I'd ask Joe Plumber on the street before I'd ask ken Rockwell.

City-Exile is spot on. Go try a camera in your hands before you decide.

Nikon D40 man myself here... have you thought about Olympus?

Their recent announcement of the new micro 4/3rd camera is really interesting in my opinion - small and light enough to fit into your pocket (though no optical viewfinder):

ah poor Ken! All he's trying to do is enlighten the rest of us on all things photography related! We should be thanking him and donating to his worthy cause

    Interested in micro 4/3 myself.
My only fear is the resolution they're attempting to drag out of those little sensors.
They struggle with 10MP, so 12MP in the case of the Pana G1 could be trouble.
