Spirits are untouched. Beer is too, except for brews between 1.2% and 2.8% ABV which will attract half the excise duty.

    Guinness Mid-Strength all round

Those idiots in power seem to be discouraging the trend of drinking at home and trying to get us back into the pubs.
Its been our biggest talent and claim to fame as a nation so maybe just maybe if the tax and cost of living in this**** country was affordable the curse of middle class could be reinstated.

    Aldi wine FTW :)

I heard that rumour as well but actually thought it would be implemented in this budget. Its a ridiculous sop to vinters who like the rest of us better get used to harder times for the foreseeable future

To look after their publican mates/interests.
Traditionally if a brewery puts up the price 10cent, then a pub puts it up twice that!, while an offie just puts it up the 10cent, if at all, so people would drink at home even more if beer was hit.

They see wine as the rich mans drink, so want them spending money back in the boozer, they can well afford it.

Thats my take on it anyway.
    Aldi wine FTW

    Excise Licences

A range of alcohol-related licensing fees, including off-licences, but excluding pub licences, are being increased to €500 in each case.

How blatant does it have to be?

Well, I heard a rumour that Brian Lenihan is going to personally visit every off licence in the country and pee on the floor.

They'll have to install their own Lenihan levee (sp).

    Sorry.

Looks like wine sales in the North will increase!!!! Certainly makes it very apealing to drive across the border and shop. Especially with the exchange rate at the moment. It seems its actually great now to live so near to a country border thats not using the euro!!!!

My calculations looking on websites is that i only need to buy 2 bottles of spirits to pay for my petrol there and back!!!!!!

Also Asda/Tesco seem to offer discount for 6 bottles of wine or more:D

Will the extra VAT hit the alcohols when it comes in for the christmas shopping?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28 Failed Salesman

Do you mean the increase in the standard rate of VAT, or an increase on the tax on alcohol?

The increase in the standard rate of VAT will take place on December 1st, while the increase on tax on alcohol has been in effect since the midnight after the Budget.

VAT of 0.5% will have to be added to current prices after Dec 1. So, if current pint is €4 then new price becomes €4.02. I expect that the pint will become €4.05 or €4.10 for Christmas.

    Clever tax

Women drinking a bottle of rosé will cost them more. Hence less women drinking at home, back into the pub.

Women in pub = men in pub.

Shows you how pathetic this government really is.

Too much bloody wine in Ireland. Ay off license you go into there uis wall after wall of wine, then just a couple of bottles of spirits behind the counter.

Too right. And don't get me started on restaurants: classy wines up the wazoo, but the beer equivalents of Piat D'Or and Blue Nun.

How many different whiskeys and vodkas would you like to choose from?

Unfortunately very few restaurants have a good selection of wines.
And I've never been to any off-licence, if it counts.

Perhaps, but there'll generally be something with some kind of appellation. However, you'd be very lucky to find a beer in an upmarket restaurant that even lists its ingredients.
