Mandriva Linux 2009 released

Anyone looking for fresh meat should check out Mandriva Linux 2009. Don't bother with the free version which is nothing more than a bad dysfunctional demo designed to put you off - a waste of a download.

The "powerpack" (EUR 49 download) has a cool interface and has all the latest versions of software (eg Open Office 3.0, Firefox 3.0.3, KDE 4.1.2) included. The download is about 4.6 GB. Full list of packages included:

Better country support for Ireland compared with SUSE linux, whose installation set-up looks as if it was designed by Ian Paisley 20 years ago! Despite the fact that SUSE and its current owner Novell has its European (EMEA) operations in Ireland.

I disagree that the free version of Mandriva is a bad dysfunctional demo, unless you're talking about Mandriva One (the Live CD version) which I've found a bit lacking in previous releases (I've not tried One 2009.0).

As a long time Mandriva user (since Mandrake 9.1), I'd suggest giving One a miss and instead go for Free 2009.0 (the install to hard drive version):

Three are ISOs for a three CD set, a DVD, or the version I usually install from - a single CD mini version that can install either i586 or x86_64 kernels with a barebones set of packages that you can add to using the online repositories. http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ to configure your repositories - add PLF for codecs.

Powerpack is simply the free version with the addition of official support, licenced codecs, some proprietary firmwares, Google apps (and a DVD and manual with the boxed set). The core distro and free software packages are exactly the same as the free version.

This version is nicer looking than Vista - which costs €300 odd if you buy it in a box in a shop - and it offers far more functionality. If you don't support companies who make a good effort in the open source space, they will go out of business. €49 will hardly break the bank :-)

It's all GPL right. So you are free to pass it along to your mates if you purchase the full price one ...
