No firewire on the Macbook & only firewire 800 on the Macbook Pro. I'd imagine there will be a lot of disgruntled audio interface manufacturers - not least Apogee with their Ensemble & Duet.

No firewire at all on the Macbook, and 800 only on the Pro...
That really can't be a good move.

Savage laptops, but the lack of firewire is worrying.

There is one very good reason NOT to get one of these new macbooks or pros.
    USB3!
Apple have released these as a stop gap to fuel the christmas market.
They know usb3 is very very close and ten times faster than usb2.
Firewire will be obsolete as soon as usb3 is unveiled.
They have even dropped FW400 from the new MBP and left FW800 for the photographer/film maker/ audio guys.
The next gen of these new models will be released about March of next year (guess) with usb3 support making the models released today obsolete.

They do look fabulous though and I would LOVE the new macbook but I have a blackbook with firewire and a macbook pro too. When usb3 comes out I will replace both of them but until then the new models are not for me. I NEED firewire.

The best thing for anyone in the market for a new mac laptop is there will be SILLY deals available on the previous models next week either on ebay or from jigsaw24, macwarehouse et al.

Interesting, I haven't heard anything of USB 3. Do you have any links to articles about it? Poor old Metric Halo - recently announced new Mac only FW400 interfaces, likewise Digi & their 003+ (although this will supposedly run on PeeCees everyone knows they don't work proper!;))

    Thanks

Do a google for "usb 3". The quotations will limit your results to relevant articles.
FW800 is compatible with FW400 so the MBP will work with any firewire interfaces.
I think the new macbook is so close the the new MBP that Apple have crippled it for the pro user on purpose. Must have been hanging out with digidesign:D

I'm kinda glad now I didn't hold out... got my MBP in early August and needed it for music stuff asap.

I mean apart from the better graphics card, a Geforce 9400+9600, there's not much of a change in the 2.4ghz model. And you lose a firewire port (which I kind of need for my external HD).

My advice for anyone buying is to look out for col deals on ebay pretty soon. Although I honestly don't think they will drop the prices that much, as the spec is almost as good on the older machines!! Even when I was getting my 2.4, the lower gHz models were a couple of hundred cheapr, but nothing drastic. Macs hold their prices pretty well.

must say they look awesome tho, altho won't be getting one for good while!!

usb 3 is still quite a ways away yet. I think 2010 is the soonest it will be unveiled so firewire is still very important for pro-audio work and the loss of it on the new macs is strange.

No real hardware update for them either apart from a new graphics chip as far as I can see. Think Ill hang on to the old MBP nothing to tempt into getting the new ones.
