One thing - the assumption has been that this is a road racing club and emphasis has been on AAI, BHAA. This is also a Tri forum, no reason teh A in Athletic couldn't cover Tri or be expanded to A&TC in future.

    Boards A.C. - "Now y'er running"

I guess we drop the ".ie", but wasn't there some mention back in the mists of the original thread of having an alternative name for the BHAA races. Not sure what the reason for it was though.

Hey Robinph, I was thinking that Boards AC would be the main name of the club with participation for the BHAA races running under Boards.ie who's runners will be from Boards AC.
I plan on getting a final list of names for the xcountry by lunchtime tomorrow so I can send the names of to Charlie and also I'll call him and ask him what his thinking was behind the Boards.ie.
If I was to have a guess it would be so people can associate us with the IT industry and not some top running club, I don't think it matters too much either way, as we will all still be running for Boards AC regardless of name.

    We can dream though.

    1. Do you need permission to use the title Boards AC (from boards.ie maybe)?

    2. Why do you want to call yourselves Boards AC? Obviously you all met and the idea evolved here, so you want to have a club together, but do you want to represent boards.ie? Like Togher AC represents Togher in Cork...If you are going to represent boards.ie, by wearing boards singlets etc., I'd be wanting something back, e.g. sponsorship from boards.ie for the free advertising etc. Failing this something like 'Ireland online/internet AC' or 'Virtual AC' might do the trick.

No. 2 might sound odd, but I grew up with a father that would cut the Levis tag off jeans so that he wouldn't be giving them free advertising!

But if this is going to be a registered club which would need an EGM and a vote to change the name, I'd think it through a bit before rushing into it.

Some good points RF but thats what the poll is for, if people are not happy with the name they could/can vote to change it, but so far nearly everyone seems happy, as regarding sponsorship and stuff, certainly something to be looked at in the coming weeks.
And as regards getting permission, I wouldn't think this is neccessary as the name Boards AC can either be linked with the web site or not, depending on whether they want to sponsor us. Just thoughts.

boards AC works, im happy enough with that unless someone actually suggests something else.

oh and does anyone know how to do sigs for us? so everone know how freakin' awesome we are.

I'd be fairly certain it wouldn't be an issue calling ourselves Boards AC as far as boards.ie is concerned, but might be polite to send Vexorg a PM just to let him know what we're doing before it becomes too "offical" as far as registering with the AAI etc is concerned.

Hi Robinph, I have sent them a pm and I'll let you know what I hear back.

    Hi David

Yes thats fine, the football team is called Boardeaux and we have sponsored both the football team - referee fee and the cycling teams kit design.

If you think a sub forum to chat and organise things would be useful- let me know.

    Thanks

I absolutely agree with this post, I know I'm not part of it, but as said, why represent Boards.ie? If you are - I would want some kind of funding from them - maybe for gear or something. Gear with their logo - worn by countless people - at countless races - surely that's worth something?

I know it's a minor thing, but running under Boards.ie, or even affiliating myself with them, is not something I'm prepared to do, which is one of my main reasons for not joining.

edit: sorry missed that last post by woddle.

A good start. Get your best negotiator onto this - find out the market worth of such advertising (wearing slinglets with sponsor name and any other miscellaneous advertising) and get the amount of sponsorship that it's worth.

Might be worth speaking to the soccer and cycling people - see how they went about it. Whoever sponsors you will potentially get a lot of advertising - if you have lots of runners in lots of races with lots of people watching e.g. Dublin marathon, mini-marathon, although I've no idea what this is worth. An ongoing committment rather than a one off payment might be preferrable.

Here is the design of the Boards.ie cycling kit that they got themselves, including a link to the original threads where they came up with the ideas:

Obviously we are all boards.ie members but I wonder if having this in the name would put some people off because they think it’s seen as a geeky discussion forum or they don’t agree with what is discussed on various forums and so don’t want to be associated with it.

I’d see boards as the virtual club house where because of the nature of the club meeting face to face might not be possible for many members.

Would something more generic have a better appear in the non boards world? You could always have “sponsored by boards.ie” or whomever display on any kit.

Since people are spread all over the country what about something that reflects that?

    Hibernian AC?

Its a good point, I should clear something up. We no longer will be having 2 names Boards AC and Boards.ie. Charlie from bhaa said theres no problem in calling ourselves boards ac in bhaa races.
Also when looking for sponsorship from boards.ie, I think the main thing we have in our favour is that we would be called Boards AC and I would be hoping when negotiating with boards.ie that we could get our singlets made as well as other gear and possibly our fees eg AAI membership etc.
As the exposure boards.ie would recieve with us called Boards AC would be far greater than sponsored by boards.ie running under a different name.

Some good points re club name.

Am wondering whether Boards AC would be advisable. It limits our potential for sponsorship (e.g. other businesses may be unwilling to sponsor us as we're essentially named after a different business).

We need to carefully consider this.

Woddle - can we use a temporary name for BHAA for the moment?

I've sent in the info today for the x country on Sat, but if we decide to change it, I don't think it will be a problem.
