I'm getting in the NTL digital go max package at 32 euro per month.
My friend is with sky and she gets all these asian, romanian, indian
channels as standard.... Do you get these same international channels with
NTL as you do with SKy?

    Cheers

No, there is a French channel free and an Asian channel which is subscription only. Thats it.

There's also foreign language versions of Euronews on NTL up in the 800s.

If foreign TV is what you're mainly interested in, don't get either Sky or UPC. Invest in a decent motorised dish and a FTA box. You'll be able to pick up plenty of foreign langauge channels without any monthly charge. See here for examples: http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/Europe.html

If you must go for either and you want some foreign TV, Sky has more to offer. Both UPC and Sky are aimed mainly at English speakers. Which is no surprise, as they are both commercial companies and English is the majority langauge in this country - they are doing no more than giving the people what they want.

I agree with most of what you said, except it would be culturally interesting to get some foreign channels, for expats (Between UK and ROI, there must be a lot of them.), for students who are learning a foreign langage...
It is a bit frustrating as in most european countries, one can get channels (or at least their international versions) from Spain, Italy, Germany, England...and so on through the equivalent of Sky or UPC...
Instead we get an awful lot of teleshopping, commercial rubbish.

Bottom line is if you really want some genuine foreign channels (not TV5, Euronews...), you should get a FTA/FTV receiver with a proper dish. And if you really don't wanna pay mega bucks for it, I advise buying receiver directly from abroad, it's often a lot cheaper, and if you know how to set it up yourself, it's definitely worth the risk.

I'm hoping next year I'll be able to enjoy some DTT via the aerial and some foreign channels via satellite.

There are Foreign language variations of Euro News too.
I'm not condoning UPC's lack of foreign channels though. Its poor.
