Canon Eos family history

Just hoping for a few pointers here folks on trying to get a cheap digital EOS.

I started my digital life with a Fuji S304 which had some small SLR functionality, but pretty restricted. I then went to a Fuji S7000 which had great shutter speeds, restricted aperture settings and an ISO range of 100 to 800. Although the S7000 was a good camera, the length of time to focus and take a number of shots was quite frustrating.

From there I managed to pick up a cheap Canon Eos Rebel 35mm camera on eBay along with a 55mm and 200mm lense. I found working with a true SLR quite exciting in terms of taking crisp shots that focused quite quickly and using a manual zoom. Having gone through quite a number of film rolls, I do miss however the luxury of taking tonnes of digital shots and discarding what I don't want later.

So now I've decided to get a dSLR EOS, but due to my most recent PS3 purchase, can only afford a limited amount of cash to part with. So what I'm looking for is views on the 300d/350d/400d. Not specifically on the cameras themselves, but what I might miss out on by not going with a newer model. Obviously the higher I go the more pixels i'll get, but I'm more concerned with the time it takes to take the picture along with having a decent ISO to take pics in low light. Having already got two lenses, I might pick up a body for a decent price, but don't want something that would be too far from the 35mm SLR i've used.

Hmmm I'd say its like this:

    300D <<< 350D < 400D

Canon cripled the 300D. You can hack the firmware to unlock lots of features decided they didn't want to give you. They learned with the 350D. THe 400D is really a minor upgrade from the 350D. There isn't a huge advantage between the two.

Well i guess the EOS350D will do the job then
You can find them on ebay for about 200Euro and their not too bad in low light. Mind you getting the nifty 50 would be a good investment. Should be able to grab one for about 70 quid off ebay.

I don't know a lot about Canyon Cameras but I have heard that the 35mm Lenses are not compatible with their DSLR's If this is true then you cannot get away with just buying a body.

The Nikon Philosophy of backwards compatability was one of the main reasons I have stuck with them.

    it not quite that simple

Canon made a good amount of eos based film cameras and all those lenses work on the dslrs

    BUT

before that they made a range of camera with a mount called FD, and theese are NOT compatiable.

    Would you consider the 1000D?

All righty then, i'll check the exact specs of the lenses I have and see if they'll work

I'm looking for a bargain EOS, so unfortunately it would be out of the price range I have at the mo.

Aye, thats what I reckon i'll do. From what's been said the 350d is only a small step up from the 400d so I'll aim for the 350d at a good price and i'll have to check if my current lenses work ok.

The 1000D is Canon's cheapest SLR. Not sure you'd get one second hand though...

And at about €360 brand new is one of the better bargains out there.

I was slightly wrong in the lenses i have, there a Sigma DL 35-80 and a Canon EF 80-200.

The Canon lens will work with any of their Digital SLR.
The Sigma is another story, if it is quite old, it may only work fully opened (max aperture).

Grand so, at least the zoom lense will be ok, but i'll try and get the Sigma tested first on whatever model I end up getting.

What I reckon i'll do is keep an eye on eBay for a cheap 350d or wait a bit longer and see if I can get permission from the wife afford to get a 1000d. Thanks for all the advice folks.

Hey, just saw these on adverts.ie and thought they might suit you ...

Canon EOS 350d and 2 Lenses

    or

    Canon EOS 1000D Digital SLR

Both asking for €450, but this is obviously negotiable to a point.

Aye, had a look at them alright but i'm still hanging out for a bargain basement price and at €450 you'd be better off adding a few euro extra and just buying the 1000d new.

Just a quick update folks. While i'm still trying to sell my old cameras to get some funds together, I got €500 dropped in my lap from a family member, as if the photography gods where talking to me. So I went and ordered a 1000d from Jessops for about €460 at the current exchange rates with a free carry case, and €40 cashback which makes it out to be about €420.

I'm happier now that I managed to buy one new, but at a good price for my entry level needs. Thanks again all for your help.

As a matter of interest, when does the cashback finish?

    Friend of mine wants one.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 7,730 Mod ✭✭✭✭delly

It finishes on 12th January 2009

I went up to Jessops in Newry and got this package as well, seems to be the best deal i could find .(calumet is cheaper but don't give a bag with it.)really happy with the camera so far.
