Joining a Gun Club

Hello everyone. I have a general question regarding joining a gun club if you live out of the state.

A friend of mine is living in Northern Ireland and has a licence to hunt in the North. He would like to begin shooting in the republic but knows of no farmers to approach or of any gun clubs that he could join. He intends to join with two of his cousins.

What I would like to know is if there are any gun clubs that do accept people that have an address in the north and if this would allow them to get a permit from the Gardai on the guns that they already own and use in the North of ireland. Sparks suggested Courtlough so if anyone knows of any more then please let me know! ;)

    Thanks a million! :)

Contact the NARGC, ring them and they will put you in contact with a regional manager.

    NARGC Contacts

Get a list of the clubs nearest where he wants to hunt.

Contact those clubs and ask are they open to membership and would they consider him as a member

Ah yes, I did contact Des Crofton before and got a good reply from him, i just failed to ask about any clubs that would give open membership. He just told me about them applying for a non-resident firearms certificate and gave me a Garda link.

Do you think I'd have an answer faster through the NARGC or would some of you guys know already which clubs would offer membership?

I'll shoot off an email to Des again and ask, but in the meantime i'm very happy to hear of any available clubs! :)

Unless you contact the gun clubs directly you wont know if they are taking members. I doubt Des would know either off the top of his head.

Some clubs can be very closed shop (lets not get into that again) so he may find it hard.

Maybe someone here who is a member of a club near Northern Ireland will know a few clubs taking people on. Might be easier if you said what specific area though or is your friend willing to travel and if so how far?

Ah I know about clubs being quite protective of members, i can understand that to a degree.

Anyways, enough of the politics! :) there's enough of that in our lives!

He would be willing to travel some distance alright...from 50 miles to about 100 miles. So I'm thinking he wouldn't mind going from the border as far south as Meath but no further across then westmeath. He's one of the most enthusiastic hunters I know. If he's not in work he's out at the shoreline shooting. He's got a massive repertoire of decoys, game callers (the whistle variety) and many other hunting materials so I'm sure he would be welcomed into a club with the knowledge he has built up over the years (he is only 27 but he's got plenty of shooting experience between Australia and Northern Ireland)

    Bump?

Any info regarding this would be superb, I didn't receive a reply from the NARGC.
