Single mum being made redundant

I’m a new single mum who has been staying with my parents for the last couple of months. I’m currently flat hunting for a place to rent for me and my son. I’ve just found out I’m being made redundant in a months time.

Where do I stand regarding claiming social welfare, rent allowance etc?

I have no intention of staying off work for longer than possible and have started looking for a new job already.

Also, any idea what would happen if I only went back to work part time for a while?

The day after you're made redundant you can go to your local social welfare office and apply for jobseekers benefit/allowance. They'll tell you everything you need to know there. Any redundancy payment will be taken into account. You'll need to bring your passport, PPS number, P45, utility bill as proof of address and a birth cert I think.

If you're eligible for Jobseeker Benefit it's not means tested. If you'll be getting the Allowance, it's means tested, so if you're still living at home there might be a reduction (but I've no idea how much, or what or why).

Once you're in receipt of social welfare, you can apply for rent allowance from the HSE. That's also means tested, and there's a cap on how much rent you can be paying, and a variety of other things. I don't think (but not sure) that you'd get rent allowance if you're living at home. You also need to be on the housing list, which you sign up for at your local county council.

Take a look at www.citizensinformation.ie for proper info.

    Thanks.

Can you apply for rent allowance before you have a place to rent? Like can I apply for it to be approved and then look for a place?

I don't think so - they have to come around and inspect where you're living, and you need to prove that you're living there. From the citizensinformation:

You must have been able to afford the rent from your own resources when you started to rent and you should have had a reasonable expectation that you would continue to be able to afford the rent into the future.
