Hey lads, i got problem with mine pc lately. I had 2mbit eircom , and all was fine until 2 weaks ago, speed just droped dead to 512kbit/s. I had some spyware and AVg to check mine pc and theres nothing...

Then i just popped in mine vista boot disc, formated mine c drive. And made a fresh new install of vista. And speed is same!

Then i ordered 7mbit form eircom. And speed is still around ~~512...

I called eircom, and they did tests, pinged and all ather crap, and said its perfect from our side... that it must be mine pc :(

they told me, to type in in comand prompt netstat /a. To see open ports and i got about 30 tcp open and 20 udp ( after resh install )

Is this speed becouse of those open ports?

How do i even fix it :(. I thought after formating disc, there will be nothing on hdd, even all harmfull stuff will be gone :(.

What do i do now lads, becouse it drives me crazy now! And will be there a point getting a norton 360? Will it sort it out?

I did do a scan with adware ( free edition ) scan and it did not ound anything. And i did a scan with AVG ( free edition ) and it did not found a thing aswell :(

Most likely your computer isn't exactly the full source.

Check your line stats on your router (given it's the default Netopia) - http://192.168.1.254/

In the middle of the page, what does it say under the heading of Speed? e.g 3072/384 (kbps)

How are you determining your speed? Don't use Speed Test - it's not accurate (Java Based).

Start downloading the file at this line - http://url.ie/qv - and make a note of the transfer rate after it stabilises.

okay it says: 7616/672 (kbps)
Line Attenuation
17/12 dB
i did speed test, and i finded out that mine speed dropped very badly after i was trying to watch some southparkzone, familyguy, youtube, gametrailers,. videos became extreamly laggy. Websites became very slow to load. Download speed was 40kb/s.

thought strange thing, when i played cod4 or wow, mine ping was like allways. Thought maybe 512kbit is enought for them.....

Ok your on a 7.6MB connnection so your approx. download speeds should be 850-950KB/s.

Go to this link and start downloading - http://url.ie/qv - and make a note of the transfer rate after it stabilises.

If the speeds are still poor, remove the DSL cable from the back of the router for 30 seconds without powering it off and connect it again,

Also, on your router - opposite side of where it says Speed, what does it say for Line Attenuation (e.g. 13/9 dB)

it says 17/12 dB m8,

I am downloading ZA at 6kb/s. and doing Wow update it will download 200mb in 2hour, so its no way i have 800kb/s download speed... i will try to take out cable now.

Might be related to the global issue - hopefully chaning your IP will solve the issue (by removed the DSL temporarily).

Also, if you use this wirelessly, test the connection with the LAN cable instead.

i am using ethernet cable m8 :(i did got a new ip adress, but speeds are same :( .

Btw does that have to do something with those open ports iwas telling at beggining?

And ater format, does alot of malware still stays on? or i am being paranoid?

The port test is irrelevant in this situation. Port 80 and 81 are for the Internet and they're never blocked.

The malware would be complete gone after a reformat - and even if you did have some, I'd find it very unlikely that it is effecting your speeds.

Try turning off your router for a full 30 seconds and restarting your computer please.

Then, one again, take that speed test again and post the results.

Also, try a tracert and post the results.

Start Menu > Run > Type "tracert bbc.co.uk >C:\tracert.txt"

A new tracert.txt will be in your local disk, copy and paste the contents up here.

Btw i copy paste into run that and command prompt justflashes, and i dont get that .txt in mine c:

Don't worry about the tracert, we're getting somewhere now.

First test for me please, download and install Firefox and see if you get the full speeds that way.

http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0.3&os=win&lang=en-GB

Second, what security software have you installed on your machine by default? Whatever it is, disable it temporarily and test your speeds again.

It could be the updates as well but they don't download constantly...

Compatibility issue between network adapter and Windows
This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between this version of Windows and your network adapter, which was made by Intel Corporation.
Solution

Go online to the Intel Corporation website to download an update for your network adapter:
arrow.gifIntel Corporation

Download instructions
1. In the File Download dialog box, click Run or Open. SecurityBadge_16x16.gif If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. Follow the steps in the installation wizard.
right.gifAbout your network adapter
The model name of your network adapter is Intel 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network Connection.

now i ant even download what vista whants, speed is just redeculous :(

What changed two weeks ago?

If it was nothing you did, there's a possibility it might just be Eircom doubling the speed of the line, then lumping 4 times the users onto it. If there's a lot of users trying to get on the one line at ones, everyone might end up getting a smaller piece of the pie.

One thing wort checking for though, is if you have a wireless router, other users might be using your broadband. I used to do it to my neighbours a lot back when all we had was 56k. If you're using WEP security on it, you might want to consider changing to WPA.

Connect up to the older PC and download the driver update from there - then copy it over to Vista (with a USB stick or CD etc.) and install it.

If not, slowly download it on Vista and install it from there if possible.

The drivers I posted are only from about 2 months ago so the update should be necessary - esp since Windows alerted you to update it and your connection is fine on your other PC.
