New 3 wood

I am about to get a new 3 wood. More than likely it's going to be a Taylormade burner TP.

So does anyone here have one ? I'm thinking that a 14.5 deg would be the best loft - local shop has a 13 deg in stock at the moment, but that might be tough to hit from the fairway ?

My driver is a Burner TP 8.5, and I've a 19deg burner rescue.

The burner TP 5 wood also caught my eye - it's 17.5 degrees - but that might be too close to the rescue for distance.

I would use the 3 wood a lot more off the tee than the fairway, so again I might be better to leave the 5 wood out.

    Appreciate any comments and suggestions.

I have the burner TP 3 wood, 14.5 degree. It's a beautiful looking club, nice shallow face which inspires confidence in me anyway that I can get it airborne from a tight lie. The TP sits perfectly behind the ball - I hate clubs that look closed at address. I have a custom Grafalloy blue shaft in it after getting custom fit. My driver is 9.5 and the fact that you hit an 8.5 driver might mean that you would have no issue with the 13 degree 3 wood?
I need more loft because I don't have a high ball flight.
Off the tee, when I hit a good 3 wood, it isn't far off my driver (superquad).
Last week I hit it 265 yards onto a par 5 in 2, 230 yards to clear the water, 240 to the front :)
    Ok it was down wind!

IMO the 5 wood is too similar to the rescue and not as useful to carry because the rescue will deal better with a poorer lie. Plus you can potentially hit a low 3 wood which is good into the wind - that would be much harder to do with a 5.

Try before you buy if you can.

Is the Burner TP driver easy to hit from the fairway? Despite the bin lid sized head, i find the regular Burner to be ridiculously good off the deck.

Admittedly it is 9.5 though, not 8.5.

If your rescue wood is close to the loft of the 5 wood then I would forget about a 5 wood. Use the rescue wood from the fairway, tee or rough.

I've dropped my 3 wood as I'm as accurate from the tee with my driver and when I need to hit the fairway then I use a 5 wood. I'd like to try a rescue wood but I don't see where it would fit into my set.

    Are you me???

I've the same combination as yourself almost and use the 3-wood instead of the 5-wood as it was too close to the rescue.

I adore the 3 wood and it is playable from the deck or as a nice alternative when the driver feels like a sweeping brush on the tee. It sits well, feels like you've really hit the ball too.

thanks for the replies lads, great feedback on the club. I think I'll go for the 14.5 degree, sounds the best option.

I haven't attempted to hit the driver off the deck at all - tried a couple of times with my previous driver but with no success, i just topped it. I must give it a go again ..

I think it's a beautiful club. Would very much recommend 14.5 as opposed to 13 degree which would be good off the tee but would fly in too flat to par 5 and long par 4 greens.

I use the Ping G10 which is also an awesome club. Bit of a neater head than the TM but if you're using other TMs it would be good to match the 3w up. IMO the two of them are head and shoulders above the rest of the 3 woods in the market.

    My 2 cents.....about 3 woods.....
I was struggling with my 3 wood, it had a graphite shaft, I would mis-hit it about 4 out of 5 times, the ball would go everywhere & anywhere !
So, I picked up an old 3 wood in my garage, it has a iron shaft, and I am now hitting about 4 out of 5 GOOD shots, and I feel more confident when I pick it up aswell. Phew...

I tried all of the mentioned clubs a few weeks back and found the new FT-i 3 wood by far and away the easiest to hit off the deck and I have to say I swear by it. The consistency of it is unbelievable from the fairway.
