Will be over near a Guitar Centre in the next few weeks, and pricewise it's worth picking up some new kit.. I know little about microphones, but wanted to pick up at least one decent one on the trip.

It will be mainly for vocals, but would also like to use for micing up a guitar and bass amp when I am recording those.

My original plan was to buy a SM57 and SM58 for a total of 199 dollars. But have been reading great reviews about the BETA 58A (about 150 dollars)..

So, given the choice would you purchase a SM57 and SM58 or a single Beta 58A? :)

I'm not a Beta 58 fan. SM58 for vocals, SM57 for Guitar Amps and Snares. Can't go wrong really, tried and tested the world over.

betas seem to have a bad rep for recording , none seems to use them , must be a reason .

actually savman and I had a banter over the sm57 a good while ago on the drumming ireland site - i was knocking it for being to dull - but it turned out to be my room / monitor setup so I bow to his experience - he was right .

now that I have a decent sounding monitor system - I use the 57 on snare all the time - and its just great , tried the 58 as well, not bad , but the 57 captures the transient snap really nice , and has a slightly compressed sound to it that adds nice body

ive used a load of mics on the snare and the 57 works the best every time

and on a guitar cab its lovely as well

a great mic - must try modding one ( remove the transformer ) as well.

I prefer Beta for live and SM for recording. Beta 52, 57, 58 & 87 makes an excellent live mic pack. 52s for kick and bass, 57s for drums, guitars and bass, 58 and 87a for vocals. SM mics generally sound better when recording, don't know why though. The 87a sounds great for recording vocals but it's expensive.

I use a beta57 on snare fairly regularly.
    Does the job.
