    Hey Guys,

The other half has an Advent 4211 (MSI Wind) Netbook and has been having problems connecting to the Wireless Network in Trinity. Just wondering if anyone else has had any success?

I take it its WPA Enterprise Network? She was told she would need to get a USB Adapter. Obviously id rather not have a USB Adapter sticking out the back of a lovely small laptop, and since i wont get a change to check it myself i was wondering if ye guys could shed any light on it....

    Cheers.

A few people have gotten the Asus Eee working fine.

Having to get a usb dongle is a pisstake. The Wind has built in wireless and should therefore work as is.

Not sure if you're using XP or linux on it, but basically she'll net to make sure it's fully set up over ethernet before it'll work over wifi. The standard ISS set up method is fairly straightforward.

Yeah thats exactly what im thinking. If its having problems i would imagine there would be a lot of people in the same boat...it is a standard wireless card in them after all.

Just using good old XP. Thought the problem might have been that it was set to use the Realtek software, i have it using the windows software at the min but she still cannot connect.

Does the Wireless MAC Address have to be registered?
Why would they need it to be working on Wired?

Would be great if it just worked, im thinking about switching the Wireless Card in it for the one in my XPS......anything for a quiet life.

Why ISS do anything the way they do is beyond most of us, but basically yes, the MAC address needs to be registered.

Basically it needs to be registered over wired first and then the MAC address is submitted to ISServices and they'll add the MAC address to their side.

For more info see here, (you'll need local access if you don't have it).

Basically I think its just to add an extra assurance that you're a student and not just using ones password, by requiring you go into the library to connect. Still easy to con around but it is a bit better.

So if you just go in and register it there you'll be able to use the wireless then.

Ok thats good to know, will check to make sure they registered the correct one and not the LAN card.

Cheers for that link has a good lot of info, pretty much exactly what i was looking for.

She has already brought it to the "specialist" guy (appointment only) and he asked her to get a USB Wireless Adapter.

Is the SSID Hidden for the TCDWifi?

I have an 4211, Id recommend changing the drivers. the drivers bundled seem to have a few issues. Id use Realtek's own drivers instead. Save you alot of problems..

Yeah i found that too, its one of the first things i did. Will try it again just incase, and will do the Big long setup myself and see if she has any luck.

Many thanks for the help guys, thinking a little clearer now.

You also have to set the network conection to "Connect even when not broadcasting", as I don't think the TCDwifi network advertises its presence.

Anyone else getting only sporadic connection to the network and then when connected, getting only local access. I really don't want to have to deal with ISS this year.

    In fact: "NETSOC!"...

I know its not your operating system but this might help some queries I see coming through now, or viewers to this thread:

Have windows vista- had local access only status, and/or very short access to the net, then nothing- downloaded vista service pack 1 from microsoft and had no problems last weekend- full, uninterrupted net access.

Col_Loki: did you get this to work?

I'm in theame boat as you, GF couldn't get it to work and asked me to try set it up. The staff in trinity said they where having problem "with them little computers" and that she should get a external wifi card

I was trying to disable the realteck software but couldn't figure it out, anyone know how?

So has anyone been able to connect it to TCD network without buying an external wifi addon? I'm considering buying this laptop.

You should be able to do it if you're running Windows. I have an Eee 1000H which is quite similar [just slightly better] and it works fine.

If i can get a phone on the network, a netbook should definitely be able to get on the network ;)

I could.. But i detest wlm and skype, and refuse to install them.

I will when libpurple supports video calling.

Actually no. I'll just go in person with my girlfriend ;)

Pidgin actually sucks. Really. When you look at how intuitive Adium is, and how horrible Pidgin is, you'll realise Pidgin is horrible.

/me adds Adium to list of reasons for installing OS X on Eee.

Has anyone figured out how to get their wireless to work in the college with this advent laptop?

Should I just get a wireless usb stick yoke? It's such a waste of money and ridiculous of them to suggest getting one!

Are you kidding? It should definitely work with the inbuilt wifi card, it's still a normal laptop ffs.

That previous post was by my gf who is having the problem.

I agree with you Baza210, it's silly and that it is only a normal laptop!

She doesn't want any more problems and is serious about getting a usb wireless yoke, as much as I tell her not to!

Since she wants it sorted now rather than later can anyone recommend a min-pci wireless adapter? Anyone experience with this Intel one: http://www.atom.ie/index.php?action=item&id=11885 Seen it mentioned on one of the Msi Wind forums as well as this dell one: http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ie&l=en&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1&sku=555-11492

Should the IT crowd be helping her out or is this not what they are for?
