That front end is manky. The bonnet looks like a slab just sitting on the wings. The first pic from further away does it no favours at all. Looks better closer up.

Truly it is an awful looking car

The front looks similar too, but worse than a Nissan Tiida (apologies to Sister Majella of Our Ladies of Perpetual Motion in Sneem)

The interior silverised plastic, well I have seen better in a Euro shop in the kiddies cars section

If the figure of 132 cv means 132 Bhp than that should bring the accceleration up to pedestrian levels rather than the truly terrible performance of the current Avensis:rolleyes:

Stiil it should steam past the majority of the current bread "n" butter Ford Mondeos crucified by a terribly underpowered 1.6l

The worst things about Toyota engines is that you have to rev the BeWhatsits out of them and you still go no faster. I expect the same from the new ones

I know I had one for a month rental on business:(

Thing is though - we now tax cars on CO2 making small capacity petrols redundant. I know Toyota will bring it in but that doesn't change the fact that since July there has been a big swing towards diesel, with 85% of Fords now filling up at the black pump rather than the green one.

The 2.0 D-4D will be the best selling model, and that has 126 bhp and 221 lb ft of torque. It's also in band B rather than band C for motor tax and VRT. As the 1.6 will be rather powerful for its size, I would imagine the price gap between it and the 2.0 D-4D will not be that big and hence the 2.0 D-4D should be only a fraction dearer.

Why don't they copy the Aurion from Australia. Nice car all-round with a really good set of V6 engines, there's no decent big toyota in Ireland anymore. :(

    Ugly from any angle.

From the front, bonnet+bumper+grille are ugly.

From side profile, bonnet looks too tall/bulky, and front lights are too big, rear ends far too suddenly and again, lights too bulky. And the proportion just looks all out.

    From rear: Plain.

I think its a nice looking car.

You lot would think it looked better if its was black.

Ok I will never drive one, sticking with the A4 or new Passatt CC but if the recession hits my company hard and my new car needs to be cheaper I would have no issue driving that.

The new Avensis is not nearly as bad as some are making out, a big improvement on the old model.

Not my thing but that's because i am a enthusiast and like something a little different. It's better than the Mondeo that's for sure.

I think the antipathy towards it has a lot to do with snobbery...

Lets be honest, it couldn't have gotten much worse. The old model was a bland car in a market infested with bland cars.

I don't like the front at all, the slab of a bonnet. It could look better in a darker colour, so I'll reserve judgement until I see it in the metal. From the rear I think it looks very similar to the newer Lexus IS range which is no bad thing really.

Toyota have now released the prices and specs for the Avensis in the UK.

It's at least £1,000 more than the old model, but comes with more goodies.

The basic T2 model has an electric hand brake, an alarm, heated electric mirrors, automatic door locking above 20 km/h and a more advanced type of ESP as standard(previously the base model didn't have these features) in addition to what the Aura model had.

The mid range TR comes with essentially the same equipment as the outgoing Luna model here, but the auto dimming rear view mirror is gone, however Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity are now standard, and so are automatic lights, 17 instead of 16 inch alloys, as well as electric lumbar support adjustment, not to mention the extra stuff mentioned above for the T2 model.

So the second from the bottom trim in the UK has the same spec as the second from the top over here! Nice one:rolleyes:!

The next trim up is the T4, and that gives you Satnav, leather, auto dimming rear view mirror, electric front seats and keyless go.

So everything you could ever possibly need really!

But if that's not enough the top line T Spirit has 18 inch alloys, parking sensors, adaptive lighting, Xenon headlights, and a better stereo.

    The 2.0 D-4D is £780 more than the 1.8, and the 2.2 D-4D 150 is £830 more than the 2.0 D-4D.

That of course is for the UK.

Looking forward to seeing how much of all these goodies are going to be removed for Ireland:rolleyes:. I'd say the electric hand brake is definitely not going to be standard, the alarm will probably go, and no doubt the better ESP system will be removed going on Toyota Ireland's past form of removing safety equipment for the Irish market too. After all they decided to remove aircon for the new iQ even though it's in the cheapest VRT band and of course aircon is standard in the UK too:rolleyes:.

Anyone else want to take bets on what else Toyota Ireland will remove for the Irish market:D:rolleyes:? Prizes for the closest guess:P!

And of course no doubt we'll be getting the 1.6 as well for good measure:rolleyes:! But I bet the 2.2 D-4D 180 won't be coming in (not that I'd buy it, but that's neither here nor there), in what, the company's flagship car here?

And will there be a trim level equivalent to the T Spirit model? If I were a betting man, I'd bet my left leg there won't be, in fact if we get something close to the T4 trim we'd be doing well. In fairness the T Spirit's spec level is overkill, I'll admit that much:D!

Opel sponsored the Irish soccer team for years and people still bought that rubbish thinking they were supporting the team.

The same way people still buy VWs because they think they are a superior quality product.

It just proves that alot of people are gullable when it comes to cars.

I thought there was a more recent thread but I've searched 5 pages and can't find it. Anyhow It's here:

Strange that the biggest polluter in the range is 169g/km diesel auto. Toyota, in their neverending attempt to please everyone:rolleyes: have reintroduced the bog spec Terra last seen in 2002 and placed, upgraded the Strata to similar levels as the old Luna, and put the new Luna somewhere in between it and the Sol.

Price wise they'll fail to woo Accord drivers, though the Luna 1.8 Multitronic S looks good at €34k, but is on the bottom limit of band D so €448 a year, but still better than the old 1.6 manual. All manuals are now 6 speed.

    Terra
      * Black front centre console finish * Radio/CD with 6 speakers (MP3 WMA compatible) * Dark grey fabric interior trim * Active front headrests (2 way) * Electric, heated rear view mirrors * 60/40 split rear seat configuration * Air-conditioning * 16" steel wheels with wheel caps * Urethane steering wheel with audio switches * Emergency Brake Signal * VSC+ * Front power windows * Electric parking brake * Automatic door locking function * Front console storage box with lid Airbags (including drivers knee airbag and front side airbags and curtain airbags) * ISOFIX child seat fixing points * 6 speed manual transmission * Gear shift indicator * Aux-in plug for external audio devices

    Aura
      * 16" alloy wheels * Front fog lamps

    Strata
      * Automatic dual zone climate control * Strata dark grey fabric interior trim * Titanium tinted lower centre console * 4-way front headrests * Leather steering wheel and gear knob * 2-way power lumbar support (D) * Front and rear power windows * Electrochromatic rear view mirror * Power folding external mirrors * Rain sensor * Dusk sensor

    Luna
      * 17" alloy wheels * Smart Entry & Start system * Bluetooth® mobile phone interface * Bluetooth® music streaming to audio system* * Cruise control with speed limiter§ * Charcoal graphics centre console * Luna fabric interior trim (dark grey or greige) * Back window sunshade

    Sol
      * Leather interior trim (black or greige) * Heated & power front seats with two memory settings * Electronic steering column * Rear parking sensors/rear parking camera * HID Bi-Xenon headlights & AFS * Headlight cleaners * Navigation system (HDD) 7" 3D colour touch screen * Premium (11 spk) audio system, 10 GB music storage

Not bad once you get to Strata, the first 2 are practically redundant.

Also came across this in the hunt for this thread

Since when is greige a colour.

Went and had a look today. Nice car. Liking the centre console box mechanism, parking brake is easier operated than the Passat and even the Terra has a LCD screen based manual aircon as opposed to dial graphic. Terra hubs are woeful though, absolutely rotten.

i wonder how much cheaper it would be to source directly from uk, at least you would get a decent spec in the tourer!

Nope, the Mk1 mondeo LX had electric front windows, central locking, sunroof and an airbag as standard from 1993. A few really really basic (e.g. below LX) were sold, but were a special order only.

There must have been more of the "specials" than LX models so going on what I've seen over the years. Even the MkII aspen lacked both of those features.

The "aspen" was the bottom of the range MkII. I only ever saw one Mk1 mondeo with wind up windows, and I would have been watching, having had one in the family for 14 years! The majority were LX, while most in the UK were GLX spec.

But we are going off point.

Toyota were still fitting a Casette, 2 airbags, no aircon and no sunroof in the 2002 model Avensis terra.. and nothing has changed.

Why do they "boast" about a utherane steering wheel in the new model? Are they for real? Why not just say fisher price plastic?

    I hate the things

Anytime I see one without a Taxi number - I think it must be a Hackney
or a lender from an insurance company - who else would buy one?

Apart form one my neighbours who have upgraded their Avensis every year since 04 - roughly around May

And apart from the first one they got - they always go for the exact same flat shade of light blue every year - they never wash it -
let it get absolutely filthy - abuse it for the year and then swap it in for the newer model
they've had the latest one for the last seven months - so I'll be seeing that 09 pretty soon - same color

I can't imagine the amount of debt they must have because of it

Its usually parked next to my 97' Escort which looks brand new next to theirs after a month or two

But I am the type who can't see the point in buying new cars - especially for the same model and also when you consider you could buy and insure a 03' Alpina for a lot less money and sell it on for close to what you paid for it

That basic spec is pretty similar to the current Mondeo Style, the previous Mondeo LX had manually operated door mirrors up until around 2006 despite cheaper Focus and Fiesta models having heated door mirrors for years. And I seen a good few MkI Mondeo Aspens about over the years, easy give away was the lack of rubber mouldings along the side of the doors.

Basic models are exactly that "basic", designed specifically to get people to buy the car who are on a strict budget or the marketing people would hope that the poor spec would persuade people to pay for the next spec up. If current middle of the range models became entry level models then we would be complaining they were too expensive. You have to draw the line somewhere.
