No Sound when changing user

Hi all, a friend has a small problem in that when he logs on to his Dell PC using his own username he has no sound at all, but when his son logs on to his profile he has sound. We have checked the settings in Control Panel and they are the same as his sons. Running Windows Xp

in the taskbar there should be a little sound icon, right click it and open the volume control and make sure its not muted

It's not muted, we tried Advanced tab as well but nothing strange there

Sound may not be muted but wave might so heck that...

Also Control Panel > Sounds &...

Audio tbs - make sure you have something selected as your audio device...

Is it basicly all the windows sound effects are gone? Had same prob with XP years ago, didnt fix it in the end, just put up with it, once other sounds work its not the end of the world
