Getting Thunderbird to work on campus internet

Hey when I try to 'get mail' in Thunderbird - all I get is a error message stating the imap server is unreachable. Is there a way to fix this so I can use thunderbird on campus?

I don't think it's possible... Someone more tech-savvy than me will explain why, but I'm pretty sure you'll have to stick with gmail or whatever.
