Prevention is better than cure for these bastards. I take a *Vitamin C-Zinc-Echinacea* supplemement and I find it hugely successful.

Once you have them, gargle salty water, it's a bitch.

I had the same problem myself a few weeks ago, i had a couple of small white mouth ulcers on my gums, one on the inside of the cheek of my mouth and the other lower on my gum on the opposite side of my mouth...absolutely f##king killed me with pain.

A friend recommended to me to gargle diluted Disprin twice every day and then swallow, it worked a treat.

These mouth ulcers usually last roughly three or four weeks but usually go away on their own, still no harm going to the Dentist if you're really in pain.

Not sure if this counts as medical advice, though I can't imagine it would (Mods, if I'm wrong and it does, delete away! :))

I used to work in a chemists and learned there that if one is prone to mouth ulcers it is often a sign of a Vitamin B deficiency. Can't remember which VitB specifically though, although I think it was B6. Still, starting a VitB complex supplement was always recommended by the pharmacist, as well as zinc and lysine supplements. Lysine because it helps in repair and maintencance of tissues and membranes and zinc either for the same reason, or because frequent mouth ulcers are also a sign of zinc deficiency.

Sorry I can't remember more of the reasons, but I do know that those three supplements are what a pharmacist would recommend.

Have you always suffered from mouth ulcers? If so, I'd seriously consider testing for coeliac disease - regular mouth ulcers are a known side effect and one in ten people in Ireland are believed to be coeliacs. I used to have chronic mouth ulcers until I gave up wheat. If it's only a recent thing, you should consider whether you are run down or very stressed at the moment and see if there's any way to deal with that.

Is it true that doctors dont know exactly what causes mouth ulcers?

Iv always found that they effect me during periods of high sustained stress levels. It might have been that I didnt eat as I should during those times...but stress always played a part.

Believe it or not, that's good advice.

A male friend of mine had discovered a mouth ulcer on the side of his mouth a couple of weeks ago, he was getting various bits of advice...to use Bonjela (which he did, and it helped).

But another bit of advice was to keep his mouth lubricated with water during the day, and gargle it. So he was buying and drinking bottled water (volvic etc..). The reason people advise you to gargle or drink the water is that it prevents your mouth from drying out in the first place, and secondly when you gargle water it numbs the pain from the mouth ulcer considerably.

Anyway, after four days of doing this, eventually he felt the mouth ulcer dissolve in his mouth (gross, i know!)..so he ended up spitting out what was left of it.

I've known a few people who've been sucessful with drinking water daily when they have these.

Yep, the pain from having these ulcers is f***ing unreal.

Intially, when you get a mouth ulcer, you actually feel like you've got a raging toothache, which of course, isn't the case...

...these do go away on their own, usually after three to four weeks, but it's still a month or so of pain to endure(even with anti-biotics)...it sounds blatantly obvious but you have to brush your teeth and use a mouthwash, twice every day to prevent these bastards from occuring...

I've had problems with mouth ulcers most of my adult life. They appear when i'm extremely stressed. or just before i get sick. I've tried alot of remedies, including changing toothpaste (some people believe the foaming agent in regular toothpaste can cause the ulcers). So far, the only thing that works for me is gargling with Corsodyl nouth wash twice a day.

I never get them but in the last week I found myself with one. Quite annoying it was. Anyways, I was eating a kiwi fruit or two yesterday and I felt a bit of a tingle in that area, it was the ulcer. The ulcer pain went away instantly, the kiwi fruit seemed to have a numbing affect on it. Nice coincidence eh? Did a bit of googling and kiwi fruits seem to work for others too. Check it out

I've been plagued with mouth ulcers for nearly 40 years, had them as a young child and all through adulthood but I don't get them too often now.

I worked as a dental assistant in a teaching hospital and worked with lots of dentists and a professor. Having access to all that dental knowledge I had them checked and none of the dentists could find a conclusive reason behind them.

The worst place to get them is on the tongue especially the tip. They are so painful and can affect your speech.

I used to have them 3 out of every 4 or 5 weeks and nothing worked. In my case without realising it at the time I think I found the possible root cause as to why I was getting them. I think it has a lot to do with your diet.

Years ago I joined Weightwatchers and followed a healthy diet, included more vegetables, salad stuff, fish, sardines in particular (5 days a week in my lunch) etc. and felt healthier. After 4 months of following WW I came home on holidays, diet went out the window, I ate less fruit and vegetables. A couple of days of this I got a cluster of mouth ulcers and then it dawned on me that I hadn't had any mouth ulcers in 4 months. The longest ulcer free time that I could remember.

Over the years when I'm not eating as healthy a diet as I should I tend to get mouth ulcers. Maybe it's down to not having enough minerals or trace elements in my diet or in times of stress not concentrating on having a balanced diet.

I believe stress can trigger these very painful basterds.

My dad went into hospital a few years ago, and I ended up with my mouth FULL of them. Couldn't talk at all. My whole tongue was covered in them. All over the inside of my lips, and sides of my mouth. So many that some were joined together. I'd hazard a guess and say I had over 60 ulcers easy.

Doctor couldn't believe it, said I should have been in some medical journal. My friends were disgusted, and still tell people, with immense enthusiasm, about the time I had more mouth ulcers than you could count.

    And Ooooooooooooh the pain, OUCH!!

The Doc gave me some mouthwash, pink or red in colour. Might be Corsodyl. Did the job. Thanks Doc.

It is true that recurrent apthous ulceration can be idiopathic (of unknown cause). Known causes include vit b12 deficiency, anaemia, trauma, bullous diseases and others. Treatment is usually palliative (we usually treat the symptoms rather than the cause unless the cause is known) and includes measures to reduce secondary infection, such as use of antibacterial mouthwashes. This aims shorten the lifespan of the ulcer. RAS is self limiting, so the ulcers will usually go away on their own.

If you do get recurrent ulceration, you should be examined by a dentist or oral medicine specialist. As previously stated, there are a number of diseases that are systemic in nature whose symptoms include oral ulceration.

An interesting thing to note about RAS is that smokers do not get recurrent ulceration. However, modern medicine cannot recommend smoking as a treatment because of the severe side effects, including death!

    I'm prone to them!

I reckon it could be from eating Crisps and Peanuts

Had some peanut Butter and bread the other day and low and behold the next morning, right on the underside of the Tip of my Tongue!

Oh Sweet Lord God and Baby Jesus!

I feel like taking a Scissors to my tongue!

Gonna give the Vitamin B stuff a go!

This is a really really painful way of getting rid of them, but it worked for me. Get an orange, peel it, take a section off, chew half of it off so its nice and juicy and put it against your ulcer for as long as you can. Its extremely painful but pain goes away a few mins later. Keep doing this for the next few days and it should go away. lol worked for me!

Can they be caused by poor occlusion?

adcortyl gel, it comes in a yellow tube, its only available on prescription, but just get a repeat prescription, that way you wont have to go to a dentist every time you get an ulcer

ive suffered with them salt magnets since i was a child, i actually didnt think there was a solution, id get on average 1 or 2 a month, alot less now actually, not sure why

but this gel works a treat, as soon as you feel them coming on ,you apply it, and they generally dont come up then, in fact, its been so long since i had a mouth ulcer on my gum, i dont know what they feel like anymore

mind you, i still get the odd one on the tip of my tongue, and the gel wont stay on your tongue because of the saliva, but it does help get rid of them, just not as quick

    hope that helps

Its true about smokers not geting ulcers. I only started to get ulcers when I gave up smoking and my Dentist told me it was because smoking thickens the lining of the mouth.

I am still getting the ulcers 6 years down the line from giving up smoking. I will try the vitamins.

get yourself some of that adcortyl, trust me, its a revelation, if you actually know your local pharmacist, they might even give it to you without prescription, mine did

There are lots and lots of reasons for mouth ulcers. Scientists aren't even sure exactly what causes them.

I used to get them a week before that time of the month. I have recently discovered also that raw tomatos are a trigger too. (not cooked though..).

I find using corsodyl mouthwash twice a day as soon as you feel one coming along works a treat. Just be careful about drinking tea or coffee soon after using the mouthwash! It can cause (temporary) staining.

I'd recommend getting it checked out by your dentist just in case it's an abscess.

That last post was about sodium lauryl sulfate allergy which will be the solution to some people's recurrent ulceration. It's quite rare to have this allergy and SLS is common in many soaps toothpastes and detergents as a foaming agent. The best bet is to have your ulcers checked by a dentist.
