    Hey,
I am not a techy at all but am the proud owner of a brand new Lenovo 3000 n200 Laptop. Every other computer i've owned has always ended up slowing down to a stuttering hault and usually takes all my data with it.
Therefore, this time around I'm looking to do things properly. Any tips on keeping a laptop humming along would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

p.s. I've removed Norton and installed AVG already

Remove all bloatware really, any preinstalled junk that you'll never use. Bring it back to absolutely nothing and build it up, starting with a windows update and other essential software.

Hmmm, was thinking that myself. there seems to be a lot of programmes that start up when I turn it on. How do I remove programmes? very basic level here...

Control panel, add/remove programs. And anything there that you dont need, just be careful not to uninstall audio drivers, and the likes of synaptics pointer softerware and things like that.

format and repartition. 1 partition for windows, 1 for data.
reinstall windows with drivers and full updates.
    Install essential software.

    use it

another tecnophobe here, how do you know what you need and dont need on a laptop?

When my laptop does a scan it takes over an hour and a half and checks over 300000 files.

    Too much on it?

    Nope, that's normal.

One good little tool is available with Spybot S&D. There's an advanced tool that gives you any startup registry entries, and a description of what they do and how needed they might be. Some have several explanations mind, and some dont have any... but it's better than regedit at times.

For one thing it lets you 'switch-off' an entry rather than deleting it to test if the system will run without it or not.

Recently used Pc Decrapifier which basically removes any crap you don't want/need resulting a pretty clean windows OS.

As mentioned above, Reinstall windows and have a data partition.
You could get a external harddisc for backup of your data using synctoys or something.
