Hi, I have a Whisper 200 wind turbine connected to 8 x 220 amp deep cycle batteries via a Whisper Charge Controller , all wired up and working well.

I also have some solar electric panels which i want to put up very soon,

My question is how to i connect the solar panels to my battery bank and do i need a second charge controller?

    All help appreciated

You would certainly need a separate charger unit for the panels, the wind turbine is likely to be producing energy when there is no solar.

My initial thoughts are that both systems would best be left as independant as possible, but there is a risk of overcharging the batteries if you get a windy & sunny day.

Is there such a thing as a dual input charger??

You would probably need a separate charge controller ok, and sized according to the panels you have. But since you have the PV panels already, Then I'd be using them for sure.
how many amps are you getting? 12 or 24v? Have you a dump load and how often are you dumping power? If your keeping the battries charged up, then perhaps a couple more, or perhaps dumping into an emersion heater?

At the moment I have 8 deep cycle batteries, 220amph each , only got the Turbine up Saturday last and the battery bank istill only at 25v, when they are fully charged the Whisper controller has an intigrated dump load so thats where the excess power goes, I am hoping to use all the generated power in my house and or shed so it looks like i will go in search of a solar charge controller.

Yesterday when we had some wind I was getting 15amps from the Turbine at some stages but the average was 9 amps over the daylight hours.

    Thanks for the help.

I will update this thread with my findings

Hi, if your anywhere near Sligo or Letrim you could try either of these guys for a solarcharger.

Mod edit: PM the details please. Cheers.
