How do I get an amateur radio licence

Hello all, I recently had to get a marine VHF licence, and Ive decided I really enjoy this radio business so my question is as above.
Im in cork if that makes any difference to where i can get it from.

The first step in getting an amateur licence is to spend some time listening
on the amateur bands. You can buy or preferably build a receiver. If you like
what you hear, you can take the necessary theory exam and a apply for a
licence.
