Yes. Only issues - Alternator Died - €90 for a recon and fitted myself, Backbox pipe fell off €30 for a used one and still on 8 months later.

1995 Nissan Primera 170,000miles, acquired Over 12 months ago now has 190,000miles, a soldier of a car!

A work colleague of mind always buys bangers usually for €100 or less and gets a few months out of them. He has to park in some rough spots around Dublin so he usually throws a brick through the passenger window and leaves the glass and brick on the passenger seat. The scum think that it has already been broken into and move on. :)

(I don't know what he does if asked for a lift!)

My MB is nearly 11 years old with 170k miles but not really a banger yet!

NCT out of the question then? ;)

The timing belt went in my escort last week + a mechanic said it would cost between 500 and 800 to fix. PRobably about twice the value of the car!!

Think I will probably offer it 4 parts. Otherwise its solid but the body is kinda knackered. Lots of scratches + dents. Got 40k out of her in 3 years - not bad for €700!!

With a broken T/B is it better to just get the thing scrapped??

My first car was a '90 Micra K10 that I bought in 2004 for €200. It lasted me 3 years until the engine died in it. I still have it, hopefully I'll get it back on the road again in the near future.

My current car, a '95 Ford Escort 1.3L, I bought it during the summer for €750, and so far, not a problem with it at all. Cheap to run & cheap to fix (the good ol' Ford Kent pushrod engine!). Hopefully it will last me a good few years with a bit of luck.

The secret I think is servicing it regularly. I change the oil and filter in my car every 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first. I change the sparkplugs and air filter every 12 months.

    Good thread!

I have a '96 Xantia 1.9d, Bought for 500quid with 6 months tax + NCT on it. The clock has frozen at 193k so the mileage is unknown. Passenger window is broke, the clutch is slipping, the alt warning light is a bulb stuck to the top of the dash, and one of the engine mounts is gone.

Still works tho and the engine is as sweet as a nut.

Faltmate had to replace a funflat tyre on his bmw for 495euro, I got a whole car for a fiver more.

94 Toyota Corolla here. bought it at 146K heading for 169K now. Never let me down.

I kinda miss having a banger. Parking it wherever I liked and not really caring. Fixing it for pennies. Those shiny vs scrap moments are always fun too. I remember one thime when I was driving down the street where I live I had a funny confrontation with a brand new mercedes. There was cars parked on both sides of the street but there was still loads of room for us to pass each other at the narrowest point....which at our respective speeds was just where we were going to pass. The problem was she was well over on my side of the road and seemed to expect me to stop and wait for her. No chance! :) I put one wheel just left of the white line and kept a constant speed - if she wanted to hit me on my side of the road that was fine with me. I'd have just scrapped the car. She swerved at the last second and the dirty look she gave me was hilarious.

I keep thinking about going out and buying something mad. A big 3l v6 banger...

Yup 97 corolla 1.3 xli, 187k on the clock, got it 3 years ago at 135K and still going fine.

It needs a new radiator though so I am going to try and get one from a breakers yard or a refurb. There's a knock coming from the drivers side suspension set up so that needs a look too. This weekends work I'd say

Love the car though (slow and not exciting at all, but comfortable and very easy to operate/drive). If the engine dies I think I will just buy the same model for about 500 quid

Bought a 94 polo about three months ago for €100. NCT'd till november 2009 and 4 new tyres. Gave me a bit of a fright a couple of days after buying it as it wouldnt start. stuck a new (second hand) dist cap and plugleads on her and she hasnt looked back since. she aint pretty though, theres a big rusty hole in the passenger side door sill and the front of her just underneath the bumper is entirely brown. no interest in future repairs.

The family car is a 95 corolla that I semi inherited about 3 years ago for €900. I wouldnt class this as a banger though as it runs perfect and bodywork is undamaged. it also passes the NCT without being looked at. so definetly not a banger!! :D:D

How much do you need to spend to qualify ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,479 ✭✭✭Volvoboy

I'd say anything under €1500, tho there really is a thrill of buying a car workable & legal sub 500.

TBH it doesnt have to be in ribbons to be classed as a banger.

    91 Lancia Dedra 1995ie
got it at 80/82k 3/4 years ago for 700€( to pay for head gasket and stereo:)
spent the same again on fixing the Italianness of it- strange leaks and rust and exhaust and some engine parts.
I have known all the owners of the car except for when it was owned as a BOI Fleet car(1st owner)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancia_Dedra.
    only 2 options for a replacement. ;)
and have not been made for some time... a few more years and Classics....

oh and my previous cars were a 1996 Fiat Tempra1.6ie and 1990 Fiat Tipo1.4DGT.
i have turned down some nice more modern cars to keep mine. hard to be with out it.

Got a 99 Fiat Punto two years ago - definitely in the banger class now due to two dented doors, courtesy of bad parkers in public spaces.

I'm saving hard for a newer car (Thinking of €12-15k Mini Cooper S hopefully) so until I have the cash in the bank, the Punto will be on the road.

Sorry for the double post. Long time-lurker, infrequent poster. @eringobragh, the clock says the equivalent of 82k miles, and we all know the clock never lies.

Had to look up that Nissan. Ex taxi eh? Good luck :)

@mike 65, yeah, kinda sneaky of me, it's actually a maxima with a japanese badge. The VQ20 engine is legendary and the transmission is smooth. Used as a taxi for a while but too heavy on juice for that game. Can't wait to cruise like a yakuza in that baby, a mate of mine runs an old lexus ls400. Future jap classics rock.

Just passed NCT re-test, "by a gee hair" :D Failed first time on emissions and anti-roll bar droplinks.

    Base car = €900
Major Service including 4 new Dunlops, track control arms, track rod ends and brake pads = €750
    NCT = €50 + €27 for re-test
2nd hand cat to sort emissions (just) = £82 to my door
    Droplinks = £15 each
Fuel, road tax and insurance = inevitable :o

Owning and running a "japanese jaguar" that feels and runs better than some modern muck...Priceless :D

i have had nothing but bangers, i could not afford anything else, plus the thoughts of borrowing money to buy a car (of all things) always gave me the shivers. now i have a 91 merc 190e, 1.8 auto, 105,000 on the clock and 4 years service history on it which seems to prove the spedo is correct,i have it since feb, it cost 650 lids, nct is up at the end of the month, i will not insult it with another one, the only money spent so far was 130 lids on 2 tyres last week.

The Cat was from a breaker in the UK. Bought it online, gambled that it would fit. Had to swap over heatshield brackets and weld them on, grrr. Wasn't any real difference between the 2. Passed on the limit for CO after driving it "like i stole it" to the test centre and the tester letting it heat up for 1.5 minutes before he took the reading. The guys at the centre seemed to really like it.

Fair play. My NCTs on Thursday :( .Hopefully 1995 190K Miles Primera will make it again! No pre-tests just chucking her in and see what feedbackI get. I've a feeling she'll fail on the shocks :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 162 ✭✭Brabus

Here, here another newcomer to the club.
'96 Punto, originally english reg. I am owner number 8 in Ireland so god knows how many owners it had in the UK before that. 92K on the clock, not bad, colour well faded on it now, originally bright red.
Bought for €400, so far spent €50 in total on wiper motor and switch but still tryin to fix it.
Radio only works sometimes but its not too important as I only drive 15 mins to work.Fan blower also gone in it too.
Gearbox ready to drop out one of these days!!
I'll only tax her for 3 months as NCT is up in Feb '09, then I'll get rid of her 'cos she would'nt have a hope of passing an NCT ever again.Shocks nearly gone too.

It cost too much to put her right again.

My phillosophy is just keep the essentials in it working, anything else is a bonus.

I'll drive her till she drops dead on the side of the road!!;)

last 3 cars i've bought have been from the UK (all jap imports), take them over myself and drive them for a year or so. Then sell them usually for a profit, jap imports are dirt cheap over there and usually make good money over here. The last car i had was an MR2, bought for €3900 (on the road here) and sold it during the summer for €5000.

E800 got me a peaguot partner van... with 250,000 miles on the clock... flat in 5th will get you to 73mph ( it was 80 when i bought it :( )
theres a hole in the carpet where my foot rests.. and she stinks..

but i havent spent a penny on it... starts every time...
sorry i bought a new headlight bulb and wiper..

only down side is that the locks dont work and the radio code was put in too many times so that doesent work.. havent locked it in dublin in 8 months now and no one has even looked at it...

Know of a guy who never spent more than 500 quid on a car, he was well paid too but had no heed whatsoever in cars. Just kept them till they stopped, might knock 6 months or a year out of a car at a time.

Anyway, one of ‘em was nicked from outside his local one night. Didn’t bother reporting it stolen. Got a call from the cops about a week later asking him if he owned car reg. XYZ 123 which was sitting in their yard. Said he did and was asked why he didn’t report it. Answered that it was worth nothing and couldn’t be bothered. The cops told him to get it out of their yard so he reluctantly went down to the station.

Found his car in pmo, clean as a whistle and fitted with a stereo system and new tyres, things it didn’t have the previous time he saw it. In lieu of rent, as he liked to put it.

    Very considerate thieves round there.
