They have it back up but only for on-campus access.

They really have to move us over to the new student mail thing now.

Claiming they're still blacklisted by a handful of lists. I guess CS don't want to have people shouting at them if certain email doesn't get delivered.

The service isn't appropriate for its user-base. Lán stad.

    It's gone again.

    Again!

    PLEASE MOVE US TO STUDENTMAIL.

    ffs tbh :(

CS finally had the cop-on to start putting the email notices on the webmail log-in page. Needless to say - it's down offcampus.

    That's still not entirely acceptable.

What about the people who can't get to college easily in the evening or go home at weekends?

They should have moved us over to studentmail. They moved the staff over, they should have moved us over too!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,054 ✭✭✭Carsinian Thau

I didn't know they moved the staff over.

In that case, we should definitely be moved over too.

Of course, how long will that take etc.?

I've seen lecturers using the new email system, presume they were moved over. Not sure if it was before or after all this. It would probably take a while to move everyone over, meaning it would be a Summer thing.

Good point. Good to have a compsoc account to for tunneling. Failing that, telnet into beacon and forward all mail to another account.

I got this in an email a while ago, i haven't logged into webmail since :)
    1) Right-click desktop, select New - Shortcut.
    2) Type: telnet
    3) Click Next and Finish
    4) Double click the new icon.

    5) In the box that appears, type:

    open beacon.nuigalway.ie

    followed by enter.

You'll be asked for your username here. Type in your student number:
Then you'll be asked for your password, type it. (it mightn't actually show
anything being typed but still type it in).

    now .....(nearly there)

    type:

mai .........press ENTER (Not a typo, you drop the 'L' from mail)
    set forward .........press ENTER

(Not a typo, you drop the 'L' from mail)

At the next prompt, type in your gmail or hotmail or whatever address.
    Now, to finish, type:

    exit ....press ENTER
    logout .....press ENTER

Was referring to that in my last post. Just one problem: last time it went down (last weekend), none of these messages were forwarded -- they all came in a giant backlog one day. Received an email from a lecturer sent on Wednesday just this morning so it's not completely failsafe. This procedure is also outlined on the Computer Services website.

Are them instructions based on a Windows XP computer? Running on Vista here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,318 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

Follow this to get Telnet working in Vista, after that it should be the same.

Alternatively, if you know someone with an Xp laptop or Pc you could do it on theres, it only needs to be run once.

I tried using Telnet on campus a few times to do that but it never let me type in my username.

Any suggestions as to what I was doing wrong?

I take it you need to do this on campus? I get the message 'could not open connection etc etc'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭ZorbaTehZ

The email service at webmail.nuigalway.ie is being shutdown during this periods and from my understanding of the situation this wouldn't allow receiving of email and hence no forwarding which would explain the 'backlogs'... I could be wrong though.

Also here is the link for email forwarding

How do you go about canceling telnet forwarding if you were into that sort of thing?

Go as far as you did in setting up forwarding in the first place: run telnet, open beacon.nuigalway.ie, log in, enter "MAIL> set noforward" and close the session.

Finally managed to get it setup (I realised at last that the password just doesn't come up as you type it).

No more webmail related awkwardness! Or less at least.
