complete newbie here!im gonna be buying a laptop for someone as a present in the next few days and i have a few questions.they want to get broadband thru eircom coz they are gonna get a free wireless modem but dont want a phoneline what charges will they have to pay?what is the best/cheapest way of getting broadband?

You cant have Eircom AND no phone line, Eircom's products are only available if you have a phone line. It has to be both or a different broadband provider. Depending on your area you will have to do some research to see what companies offer a service in your area. There are a few that dont require a phone line. Clearwire are the first that come to mind and you dont need to have a wireless router, you just buy it in a shop, plug it in and fire away...
