Legal Basis for No Purchase Necessary Condition in Competitions

I was wondering if anyone could provide any insight as to whether there are any legal reasons behind the no purchase necessary condition with regard to competitions being held on purchased goods e.g. if Coke have a competition, with a code under the cap of a bottle, they will makes arrangements for people to enter who don't actually make a purchase.

I don't know if this is universal (can't say for sure if it is ALWAYS the case with regard to competitions in association with purchases) but it is pretty common.

I would presume there is some legal basis for this and I wonder if anyone could shed any light on what that might be?
