I'm really embarassed to ask this dumb question but my math sucks so bad!
It's related to computers but this is math question, maybe you can explain how to calculate this.

Say you've got 120GB of data, and you want to transfer it to another media at a speed of 1.5MB per second.
How long would it take to transfer the data?

Considering that one GB = 1024 MB, you have 120*1024MB of data, divide by the transfer rate, so it will take 120*1024/1.5 seconds. roughly 80,000 seconds, about 1200 minutes, looking at about 20 hours.

All those calcs in my head im too lazy to open calculator.

    120,000/1.5 = 80,000 seconds = 22.22 hours.

On a less mathematical note, are you sure the last number is megabits or megabytes?

    Oh, it's probably megabits.
How do you factor that in to the equation?

A bit is an eighth of a byte, so a megabit is an eighth of a megabyte.

You multiply 22 hours by 8 to get 177 hours.

wow that sucks. It sucks that the words are so similar. Megabits and Megabytes.
I just read that Megabits are abbreviated as Mb
    Whereas Megabytes are MB
So, looking at documentation, one of my options is megabytes.
USB 1.1 however, is in megabits. - that's where i got the 1.5 from.

    Anyway, thanks for the help

Is the hard drive 120GB capacity or do you have 120GB of stuff to transfer.
If you're trying to back up your hard drive, there's no use backing up the windows directory or the program files directory (assuming you're using windows that is) chances are you have much less than 120GB of stuff to back up..
Are you planning to do a direct usb connection between 2 pcs?

Of course there are plenty of ways to do this job much much faster , like ethernet , hard drive swap , or even just buy a USB2 card ... they are seriously cheap.
