Should see their horrible blue looking one though. It's horrid.

Good show but just not as good as Road Wars :)

Hard to recognise as the police. Police should stick to a clear "branding".

Yeah the batternburg markings, flashing blue lights and hi-viz 'POLICE' markings are confusing :P

Here we have a wider spectrum of police vehicles in various colours; black, silver, blue, red, yellow....etc. The branding is the police markings, not the colour.

Yah but it's not really anything special.

Your red cars are diplomatic protection, etc etc. These guys are just regular coppers right? They have no clear marking as a special unit. Different coloured cars within the same unit. The met doesn't do that (except for white / silver) does it?

The officers on the show are from the Mobile Support Division, they are a specialist unit within the roads policing unit, i.e the anpr intercept team. They are a small team of pursuit, anpr, stinger, tpac etc trained officers.

The vehicles are a different colour for the same reason that the Met has silver cars; the resale value is higher.

The specialist markings are the 'anpr intercept team' written on the vehicle.

Fair enough with your resale explanation. Why does money always come into it?

You won't see silver dipliomatic protection cars though will you?

No, no you won't. Why? Because they are painted red to denote them as DPG! No point in having silver DPG vehicles as they would be indistinguishable from standard patrol cars. They are red to identify them and to reassure the diplomatic community whom they protect.

The ANPR intercept team have chosen high-spec rally cars as pursuit vehicles as an overt show of strength and capability to deter those who commit crime on the roads that no matter what they drive they will be pursued and caught. They have not chosen to paint all their vehicles, red or blue or yellow, but rather the unit is designated by the high performance motors and wording 'ANPR Intercept Team'. That is your 'branding'.

By spraying a Subaru white, when its original colour is blue, means additional money to re-spray when minor damage could be more easily buffed out if the original paint scheme is kept.....plus respray means a loss in revenue when the vehicle is inevitably sold on. For something like a Subaru Imprezza this is big money.

And why does everything boil down to finance? Police forces are given the minimum amount of money the government can get away with giving them. This means that forces must be mindful of assets such as high-spec rally cars and something as simple as the resale value can become a big issue in determining cost-effectiveness......its all politics.

Excuse my ignorance metman but what does ANPR stand for and whats it all about? Do these cars get banged about much, rammed etc etc, expensive business if they do. How long is the driving course to qualify for this unit, how are they picked etc. Would this unit be seen as a promotion. Id say lot of people queueing up to join

    Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
Do these cars get banged about much, rammed etc etc, expensive business if they do.

They do get rammed and banged about a bit, but have their own garage to fix em up.
How long is the driving course to qualify for this unit, how are they picked etc.

Basic driving course to standard response level is 3 weeks, then the pursuit course is an additional 4 or 5 weeks. Additional skills like ANPR operation, TPAC, Stinger etc involve more training. People are chosen based on a written application outlining their experience and skills, recommendations from supervisors and Inspector, board interview and assessed drives.
Would this unit be seen as a promotion. Id say lot of people queueing up to join

Its not a promotion but they might qualify for an additional priority payment (not sure). And yes or course people are lining up to apply to get paid to drive an Evo or Subaru on blues and twos!

Itd be an even better number if cars were unmarked and unit wore plainers.

They do that as well and have unmarked BMWs with covert blues and anpr for that purpose ;)

I actually saw an evo at checkpoint up north few weeks ago lads next to car were carrying serious weapons though - think they must be armed response or something like that.
    Nice pics

PSNI have better and newer equipment than us though.

The red mondeo looks like the fire response car.

I can't imagine the resale value of a used police car (even en EVO or Impreza) is great considering the mileage, driving style and possible collisions. Not to mention a few holes in the bodywork. Surprised that the colour makes much difference!

Well there you go. There's usually madness in the method of everything in the police.

I don't know what the function of this vehicle is in the PSNI, but it is ultra-visible....

When compared to a DPG motor, its not pretty!

No worries mate, I'm not a big fan of blinged up police cars, but I do think the Subarus and Evos get the intended message across, but are also a useful tool for engaging with younger male drivers (recently they've been used at community events and have attracted a lot of attention; simple way of engaging interest on issues like road safety stick a rally car badged up into the mix).

I just think the blue one looks horrible overall .. they could try a different shade of blue or a different style to the markings!

On the other hand I love the mets silver ones :)
