This is a cross post by me from the Men's Heath forum.

Just to reinforce the idea. Here is an article from football365 today as footballer Geoff Horsfield got diagnosed with testicular cancer and has to quit the game.
Former Fulham, Birmingham and West Brom striker Geoff Horsfield has revealed he is suffering from testicular cancer.

The 34-year-old, who was released by Sheffield United last summer and was hoping to earn a contract at Walsall, has been forced to retire as a result and will undergo surgery next week.

Horsfield told the Daily Mirror: "I found a small lump in my left testicle and went to see the doctor at West Brom, who's a good friend of mine.

"I was diagnosed last Friday and I'm going in for surgery next Thursday. The surgeon has told me that this is the end of my professional career, which is disappointing.

"But I've had 10 good years with Fulham, Birmingham, Wigan, West Brom and all the other clubs I've played for and enjoyed it.

"That's at the back of my mind now. It's just one of those things and I've come to terms with my career being over.

"All I'm thinking about now is beating this. I've always been a fighter right through my football career and I'm going to fight this and win."

Horsfield has been told he has a good chance of recovery after the diagnosis was made early.

He added: "The specialist told me I did well to find the lump because it is so small," he said. "He says I stand a good chance of making a full recovery because we've got in early."

    Get well soon.

    Wow.

    Hope he pulls through.

Isn't there a fairly high recovery rate once they whip the ball off?

Always seemed like a top bloke, and a great man in the FF at one stage. Hope he pulls through.

From what I have read, yes.

Think Alan Stubbs had it too.

Damn I'm really sorry to hear this. I remember Horsfield well from his Halifax days. My dad used to always buy me the Match! magazine each week when I was younger and I remember I used to check the scores in the league and Horsfield seemed to score for them every week. I would always look out for him to see if he got a goal. I was pleased he went on to rise through the ranks of the league.

I hope he pulls through and makes a full recovery. I think Des is right that the survivial rate is good once it's taken care of early.

    Good luck to him.

Good luck to him, a solid professional.

And the message is feel your balls on a regular basis (or have someone do it for you)

Neil Harris (former Millwall striker) had it as well and made a recovery to come back playing.

    All the best Geoff.

Just thought people might like to know the surgery went well :)

Great to see he's looking at getting back into the game, whether as a coach or a player, was always a I player I liked

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Yeah read that earlier on. Fantastic news.

Craig Moore recently had an operation to remove a cancerous testicle and was back playing in the A-League within 2 weeks!

At 34, I guess it will be difficult for him to get playing again. But hopefully someone will give him a shot at coaching. Have always liked players like him - lads who work their balls off and maximize their potential at every opportunity.

Delighted to see a happy ending to this thread.

The puns in this thread are nuts.

It's bad enough getting testicular cancer, but when you're a professional footballer you know you'll probably get the sack.
