Just wondering if anybody else is pissed off about the fact that almost all the common rooms in the Larkfield Res are locked....

I'm more pissed about the fact that the tv in ours just doesn't work, tbh.

there was a sign put on our common room saying it wil remained locked until nov 30th due to rubbish been left around, firstly this room is never open and secondly is was never messy. In my opinion there are too many stupid fines and regulations in dcu, come on were all nearly 19 some older, how about giving us some responsibility, so far livng on campus is more lik prison but at least in prison their common rooms might me open

Ah yes, memories. Learn to embrace it, because it's not going to get any better. To DCU you are not a student, you are a source of income. This is why most people live on campus for the first year or two and then leave

I totally agree, I think DCU is way too focused on fines and rules.

Firstly, staying over in apartments. I'm all for being safe and all that ... But I think 'booking in' to friends apartments and paying €5 every time is such a joke. It means I have to book and pay every nite i wanna stay over or else I have to not drink and then drive home in the early hours. It's just so stupid and it is a social life killer already! It means I have to plan every night out and cant go to ad hoc nights in the bar ... =/

Campus Res are terrible for many reasons. The common rooms in Larkfield are just another one of many to be discovered.

I always thought it was worth putting up with it all for the sake of convenience though.

I actually think that I'm so pissed off about it that I might just try to change it....

I've already mentioned it to Niall who's our new class rep. And since I've joined the College View I'll have a medium through which to publicise my efforts.

My main argument is as follows: We pay fairly obscene (in my opinion) sums of money to live in these extremely basic closet spaces on campus. We put up with the ****ty rules about no guests after 12 and no drinking in the halls. So surely, the very least we are entitled to is to watch a little telly and just sit and relax with our fellow residents.

For journalism, I'm expected to know the news. I don't see a television from one week to the next. It's bull**** to say the least. What's the Student Union there for, if not for things like this?

That's just my view on it anyway.

Good luck, you are very lucky to get campus accomodation in the first place, if you want to leave - just go! You will have no trouble trying to fill your room...

No one ever put a gun to your head and said that you had to live on campus, it was a decision you made yourself...there are lots of other places around that are much more comfortable but tbh, are not as handy...

It is a security reason, and although it can be annoying, it is a very good rule...cuts down on the **** and lets, the other couple of hundred residents sleep well...Drinking in the halls, who the hell says - "Jaysus, I'd love to get locked, let's sit in the halls...."...What I would always do if I had an open can was when security would come around or while walking through the sports complex, would be to stack a closed full can on top of the open can...stopped spillage and also they were none the wiser...

Yup, it is your right...but for every right, there is a responsibilty...I think our common rooms had to be shut once for us to get the picture and we did stay in line...tbh, it doesnt take much to fix the seating and put the cans/bottles into the bin...It's the least you may do...

I had a really long reply typed out and then my log in thing timed out and I lost it.... But really, just stop picking holes in what I said. I didn't say anything that I haven't heard from nearly all the Larkfield Residents I've talked to since I moved in...It's clear you don't live there anymore and have forgotten how it is...We're first years, the majority of people just want to have a good time.

Wow I really hope I don't end up believing that DCU is always right, no matter what, like yourself and many others in this forum..

€5 per guest, you guys dont know how good you have it. Before, we had to rely on our charm to get onto res (and you can guess how often that worked).

As for the closed common rooms, yeah its **** cos they dont go after the people who wreck them.
Though, as for the age 19+ comment, you'd be surprised how much damage a 19+ can do. I believe one night one of the rooms was missing a sizeable chunk of ceiling

The amount you paid is actually pretty standard in my experience. And it's only Larkfield that has those "closet spaces." You might notice that there seems only to be first years living there. This is because from second year you won't be allowed to apply for Larkfield.

As for the guests, this is for security. Only a few short years ago there was as total ban on guests. So this is a large step forward. I should also point out one or two things. Unlikely to be useful, but before midnight, security generally don't check ID, so you'll be able to get people in then. Also, there are times after midnight when the lone security officer will go for a wander, feel free to swipe yourself and your friends in at this time. Though expect a wandering security guard to stop you between the gate and your room if you have a big crowd or are making noise.

I believe you'll find that the no drinking/no smoking in the halls will apply to almost any apartment block you're ever likely to live in.

Lastly on the TV. Outside of Larkfield there is NTL in every living room. You'll need a licence to avail of it though. Never know when the oul inspector is about.

Also, don't Larkfield get Freewire TV?
