I would definitely recommend that you see the Colisseum and the Forum. The queues can be unreal here, but if you book a tour guide you avoid the queue. There are tonnes of them outside the Colisseum itself (you don't have to pre-book) and the one we booked also included a guided tour of the Forum. We found we got a lot more out of it having the guide, otherwise we wouldn't have known what we were looking at!

On your second day, I would aim to see the Vatican and go up the Dome. On your time, I wouldn't bother going to the Vatican museum, it takes up a lot of time and in my opinion, the only thing worth seeing was the Cistine Chapel. You should have time to fit in a visit to the Trevi fountain and Spanish Steps as well. Try and allot some time just for wandering, having an ice-cream, people watching etc, Rome is a great city to just wander around. Enjoy!

The Columseum looks pretty impressive at nighttime .... stuff listed above covers a lot... ice cream in Italy is fab!

Heya, to slightly hijack this thread for a minute...Heading to Rome myself in a couple of weeks time. We were told that it's best to book your tickets for the Vatican in advance as the queues are mental. Does anybody know where to book the tickets from, I've googled it but there's so many! Also, what should I book for, like are there bits worth seeing and others not?

    Thanks for any help!

While i agree that the Forum is amazing to view ... When going to Rome for 2days I would not go out of my way in seeing it being honest, but would see the Collisseum if you have the time only.

First off ... bring a great pair of walking shoes ... set out early, about 7am in the mornings and walk the city. You will only get a small feel for Rome in 2days but it will still captivate you in every way.

Visit the Trevi Fountain, but leave it until after 10am though when the water will be flowing full-power and you'll get its total-effect ...

(wouldn't bother with the Spanish Steps being honest) ...

Defo go Vatican City and walk into St. Peters Basicila and don't forget to climb to the top ... on a clear day the view is second to none (no exaggeration)...

The Sistine Chapel was something i was disappointed with and eventhough i was in Rome for 8 holidays last year i only went to the Sistine Chapel on the first trip.

Try the gellati and make the most of every minute you are there. The time will simply fly by and you'll be on your way home planning your return before you know it :)

Have fun and chat to some locals ... some will give you an insight you just won't read about

Most of the sights of Rome are within easy walking distance of each other, so you can see them in a couple of hours wandering around - Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps...

My absolute highlight of Rome was a nighttime walking tour I did with an Italian friend through the old city. It's really gorgeous to wander through the little streets and come across all the little piazza's all lit up.
I had no idea where I was going, wandering through narrow streets, and then all of a sudden we rounded a corner and the Pantheon was right there looming above us across a piazza. It ABSOLUTELY blew me away!
You could surprise your gf with it like that by coming to the square from Via Giustiniani.

The Trevi Fountain is also beautiful and of course no trip to Rome would be complete without trowing a coin over your shoulder into it to ensure your return!

I would also recommend the Colosseum. I did a tour and it was great as I didn't know an awful lot about the history and it also meant we got to skip the queue.
The Vatican tours take a lot of time and there's a really big queue, so with just 2 days altogether, you may not have time for it. If you get a guided tour you get to skip some of the queue so if you're interested in art I would recommend this. Also, there are THOUSANDS of art pieces in the museum, so it is nice to get a short explanation of the tour guides selection.

Best pizza ...Panattoni on Viale di Trastevere, or Formula 1 in San Lorenzo area, a bit outside of touristy areas on Via degli Equi. REALLY cheap and delicious! Starters, Pizza and beers for less than a tenner!

    Enjoy! Rome is FANTASTIC!

I was there for 2 days in April, we managed to fit in a good bit. We got early morning flights and were in Rome at 11am, after getting to our accommodation and freshening up we headed straight for the Colosseum, there was a bit of a queue at that stage (about 1.30ish) so we headed into Palatine Hill and the Forum (I think it was about €11 for the two) we saw all of the hill and there's an amazing view over the Forum with the Colosseum to the right. We didn't do much walking around the Forum as we were starting to get tired so we headed over to the Colosseum - there were plenty of people going in but no queues at all. I think that would've been about 3.30. We did a LOT of walking!!! and the Colosseum and the Forum are spectacular at night.
Day Two, we were up early and headed for the Vatican, did the Museums - again no queues - sooooo much to see there, I'm not massively into art/sculpture etc but I though it amazing. When we went to St Peter's Square we started with the tour of the crypt - the only time we had to queue anywhere and that was only for about 10 minutes if even that, when we came out of the crypt we went straight into the Basilica - again amazing! We got the metro a couple of stops to the Spanish Steps and then walked down to the Trevi Fountain, had our lunch at a little pizzaria (I'll add the name later) then a thunderstorm broke out so we headed to the Trinity pub for a couple of drinks and a chat about everything we'd seen so far - lovely and cosy! When the rain stopped we headed around the corner to the Pantheon, which was closed by then (would've been about 7pm) possibly because of the weather - I'm not too sure. I can't wait to go back and see it from inside. There's so much you can see by just walking around the city, you stumble across gorgeous piazzas and monuments - You'll love it!:)
