Need advice on an eBay dispute.

    I'll get right to it:

Bought an 1st Gen iPhone on eBay from England a few weeks back and the Wi-Fi doesn't work.

So I opened a dispute on PayPal and of course the guy claims that it worked perfectly when he had it.

And before anyone asks, it's not that I can't figure out how to get it working, I've tried every possible solution I've found online and it seems to be a pretty common hardware problem in 1st Gen iPhones, with no known fix.

BTW I don't trust this guy as far as I could throw him - he sent the package late, when it arrived it had a passcode on it and in his messages he seems to be playing dumb.

I demanded a full refund, including the cost of shipping it back to him, several times and in the end he escalated it to a claim.

So now I guess I'm waiting for Paypal to do something.

I had a similar problem with a laptop a while back and almost got my credit card to do a chargeback. Don't know much about them but would this be a good idea in this case or should I just leave it to Paypal?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

You will not get the money back for sending it back. You will need to send it with a trackable service. Once you prove it has been delivered back to the seller, Paypal will refund the money you paid the seller.

That's good to know. Thanks a lot.

Will it be a full refund or will Paypal take their usual fees?

I don't mean to sound childish, but I really don't want to have to pay for the postage either.

It's honestly not about the money, it's the principle.

This guy has done pretty much everything he could have to insult my intelligence and waste my time - I'm determined not to let him cost me money as well.

Anyone know of a way I might go about doing this?

Full refund of what you paid for the item + shipping to you (i.e. the final bill on Ebay).

No deal there, standard Paypal dispute agreement is that you have to pay for the return postage and you will not get that money back. If you go cheap skate (i.e. non registered mail) expect that it "will get lost" and because you can't prove you shipped it lose the dispute by default.
