Weird distortion ?

I'm finally going through my collection from the summer and I came across this one (straight from RAW), there's seems to be a distortion around the head, where it goes from normal colour to darker and it seems to "ripple".
It was taken at ISO 200, f5.6, 1/1600.

Any ideas what might have caused it ? just curious
    Thanks,
    Muineach

Maybe it's due to an object being between the lens and the subject, but the object is too close to focus on? Something like taking a photo through a wire fence, where the focus is distant on a subject, but you can see distortion due to the fact there is something there.

Without seeing a larger version, it's hard to guess.

Looks like moiré although unusual to see it on grass like that.

    +1

Yeah its almost certainly something between the lens and the subject. The ripply effect is probably down to the lens' rendering of OOF elements in the picture. Some lenses have a sort of 'double image' on OOF elements.

It could be as simple as a blade of grass, and the ripple is cause by it moving when the shot is being taken.

i know this is stupid but it looks like you caught the fox screaming .. and the weird curve is the sound :D

Could be speck of dust on your mirror? Did you change lenses while you were out an about?

Yea I can see where your coming from with the grass, it's a strange effect when it's nearly matching the fox's head but, when I look at the fox's nose there appears to be two shadows from grass, so I reckon your right.

I've seen this effect before at the zoo with fences but I never saw it so "ripply"
    Thanks all.

Pretty straightforward explaination on this one... the fox is moving so fast you caught him breaking the sound barrier, just like a jet! :D
