Problems playing PS1 disks on my new PS3

    Hi,

I have searched the forum for this but couldn't find anything. Also have googled the f%^k out of it too and while i have seen threads with similar problems i can't find a solution so here it is.

None of my ps1 games will work on my ps3 and i have tested them all on my ps1 and ps2 and they run fine. Basically, i pop in the disk and the ps1 screen comes up. After that its a blank screen and the games refuse to load.

I thought it might be a TV problem and have tested it on a LCD and a SDTV. I have messed around with the PS1 settings but nothing worked. At the moment i have upscaling and the smoothing setting turned off and it still doesn't work.

Anyone else see this problem here on boards?

    Edit:

Forgot to add that I have the 80 GB europe PS3 just released recently with firmware 2.42 i think. Either 2.42 or 2.43 anyway.

The only PS3 that is backwards compatable is the 60Gig version.
It won't work on your ps3 now or in the future.

Actually PS1 games should work on the PS3, it's PS2 games that won't. Can't help you with this issue unfortunately.

I understand that PS2 games won't work. It says in the manual and everywhere I look that PS1 games are compatible with the PS3.

    The games are:

Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9 and Metal Gear Solid.

Its not a huge issue cos i can always just use the PS2 or 1. It would be nice to see how well the upscaling works is all.

Are the games scratched? The PS3 might have a weaker laser than the previous machines and might have trouble reading games that are a little damaged?

I tried metal gear solid on the ps3 i dont think your missing out on anything . It seems to look worse on a hdtv anyway.

ps1 games should work on all ps3s. though they do look crap. i have played MGS on my ps3 so no problem there. a restore maybe?

Thanks for the help so far everyone. No, the discs are all almost perfect apart from disk 1 of FF8 which is scratched quite badly.

I'm thinking it may be a fault in my PS3 since there have been reports of the exact same problem. The thing is its not a big deal so i don't want to take it back and get a refurbished one as there are far worse problems such as the blu ray laser failing.

Could be my issue with Final Fantasy 9: Disc 3. Very minor scratches but will not read.

OP can your PS1 play music CD's?

Did not realise when the later releases of the PS3 were not backwardly acompatable, it only applied to the PS2. Personally when I got my PS2 many moons ago I completly lost interest in my PS! games, they just didn't seem good enough any more. Good to see a die hard fan burning the flame for PS1 though. ;)

    PS3 you mean?

No i havn't tried an audio CD.

All the PS1 disks are found by the PS3. After i select them on the XMB and start the games is when it happens, just straight after the old PS1 logo appears (I assume the PS1 emulator is started at this stage when that logo appears).

After that the screen remains blank...

Ah well MGS has to be played every so often. Classic game!
