Only forum I thought approp..Mods move if required, thanks.
We intend to add audio recording to one camera on our 16 cam cctv system.. we have made all employees aware of our intention.. It's proposed to be located near one of the tills and is intended to pick up audio during a security heist , hold up or burgulary etc etc..
Some of the employees are up in arms about it.. Quoting data protection etc etc..
It is not near any recreational area ie canteen etc etc
Once we make all employees (and customers) aware of the recording and the location are we fulfilling our legal obligations?
ps we intend putting a sign up for customers but not disclosing the location.. also cctv is only reviewed if an incident occurs

I'm no legal expert but I think you are on very dodgy ground with your proposal. You should seek professional legal advice before going ahead with your plan. I think it may be illegal to record a conversation without both parties consent or a warrant.

AFIK Without telling someone its illegal.. ie especially on phone callers must hear the announcement .."your conversation may be recorded" etc etc..
With cctv you must make people aware that the are being recorded..So I presume it's simular.. once i put a sign up (that can be seen inside the doorway)..I'm notifying..Isn't that enough?..Thats what I can make out from the data protection act actually there's very little about audio on their web site..:( http://www.dataprotection.ie/docs/Home/4.htm

I think you have to have all parties involved in a conversation permission to be able to legally record it. Notifing them you are doing so by way of a notice is not seeking their permission.

The announcement for Phone callers give them the option to refuse permission ie hang up.

You're not going to get a definitive answer here, you could get in a lot of trouble if you break the law in this manner . You really need expert legal advice.
