copy of passport to be kept on file....

    The company requires that a copy of passport be kept on HR file. I believe this is so the company can prove they are not hiring any illegal workers.
    Does anyone know the legislation that requires this. (apparently it comes into force in Ireland very soon).
    I would have thought a driving license would do? but employer seems adament they need to photocopy the passport? anyone have a link to the exact legislation?
