Wipeout HD tips and tricks

Thought it might be good to get together a list of tips and tricks for playing this game.

Here are the ones I personally know and utilize (most basic ones can be learned merely by reading the manual):

    1. When a race starts DO NOT PRESS 'X' until you see "Go", otherwise you'll start slow off the blocks. Count down the timer in your head and when you'd expect to hear "zero" then press 'X'

    2. If you are low on shields in a race mode with weapons enabled, press 'O' to absorb the weapon and give you more shields. The best time to do this is when you are in the lead and pick up a weapon that can't be dropped behind you, or you have used too many barrel rolls and your energy is depleted

    3. On any "Fastest Lap" course, make every second lap your try at beating the time. The reason for this is that you get a boost for each lap so just before you cross the starting line on your second lap hit the boost, then you will be able to use a second boost before you cross the finish line again. For the second boost I usually will use it where there is a slight hill in the course so that it launches me into the air, at which point I can do a barrel roll and get a 3rd boost for that lap.

    4. With Auto-assist off the best way to corner on sharp bends is to hit the air breaks shortly before hitting the corner as your craft will slide slightly, to compensate for this you can also sideshift if you accidentally over/under shoot the corner

Depends, online play can be horrible with it turned off as some people think the game is Burnout and the objective is to just smash you into the sides, thus letting everyone in front get away from you.

Its usually safe to disable it in online races where weapons are disabled, these races usually feature players that like clean racing.

One online feature I think is missing is a rally feature, where you can't touch any of the other crafts, rather you just see ghosts of them like in the timetrial matches.

I prefer to keep it off, feel I'm cheating myself in single player with it on, in fact turned it off straight away and never used it when I started. Are there disadvantages to having it on like less acceleration to balance it out? Have yet to play the game online so can't comment there.

I found it very annoying when trying to drive across a narrow bridge. Normally you'd be able to straighten yourself up quickly enough, but with auto-assist on it just keeps bouncing you from one side to another.

It would be like Bowling using a gutter protector..

The absorbing is great as i tend to try alot of barrell rolls.

yeah I used it for a bit but not only does it slow you down it takes over control of your craft. Like monkeyfudge said on some narror areas if you get too close to the side it will start bouncing you off both sides uncontrollably.

You also can't cut corners with it enabled which is a big problem on timetrials where you can shave off a few seconds by boosting and jumping over the corner rather than slowing down for it.

Having it on also will make getting used to the zone levels impossible as you are forced to have it disabled in these challenges. If you aren't used to airbraking the zone levels will seem impossible.

The tilt controls suck, just tried them the other evening, awful.
To be honest, the digital d pad and face buttons seem to suffice as the basic gameplay hasn't changed at all since the original classic Wipeout on PS.

As I said before, the only analog controls that ever worked for me was the negcon, and I can't find anywhere on the PS3 to plug it in!

    another tip:

you unlock the first craft livery at 4000pts, you will unlock the 2nd at 8000pts

The easiest way to get points fast is to do zone levels, I've found Anulpha Pass to be the easiest for me to survive.

Also, if you complete every stage and get a medal (doesn't matter if its bronze, silver or gold) in every challenge you'll unlock the silver livery for your craft (which looks pretty sweet tbh, I don't race without it now)

does anyone else find that the autopilot 'bonus' is pretty crap? often when I engage autopilot the craft doesn't go over the speed pads / weapons, I would have expected autopilot to take the best lines and to cover each speed pad..

Yeah i hate autopilot too, i absorb it 99% of the time. Use it on phantom races every now and then tho. BTW neever knew about that absorb have'nt been eliminated since learning this. Also to get the skins, speed laps on phantom is one of the quicket ways.

I think its a bonus specifically meant for the Phantom speed class. On Phantom difficulty it can be a godsend when coming up to a tricky hairpin or chicane

Sorry L31mr0d but i have to agree with the above posts! I despise the inclusion of pilot assist in such a quality game!
I only wish there was a filter online that would allow you to race with people on using assist 'off'!

I do have it to thank for helping me get the Gemini hidden bronze trophy (complete 20 two player split screen matches) though! I set a 12 race tournament on novice and assist on both pads. I just sat through each race holding the accelerate button, and low and behold, one player actually WON the tournament, while the other came third!!

Tip for getting loyalty points quickly though.....play single races in racebox on phantom and elite. Even if you get hammered, you will still get at least 240 points or so per race (which last under 2 mins) or as much as 400 per race (if you get perfect laps, eliminate opponents etc).

As L31mr0d pointed out, on the faster speeds, this weapon is priceless. Its the one I hope to get most of the time when racing on phantom elite.

Playing a good bit of this over the last few days......lovin it but some of the trophies are complete b1tch3s!! I love a challenge though!

I only use it for online as I feel it's an unfair disadvantage to have it disabled. Especially when players tend to try and push you off the track whenever they can. I would also prefer if they'd enable a way to filter its use though. I'd prefer a game where everyone was forced to have it disabled.
