I'm trying to get to every Irish convention I can this year, mostly to pimp my own. :)

There's be a couple more Galway heads up there too, but with everybody moving to different counties/countries this month attendance will be down...

I've been burned often enough by interesting looking blurbs in the past, so I'm not getting excited about any game, except for the Hellboy one which I playtested and thought was f*cking great. Actually, chances are I'll have to run that one...

Eh, I spend most of my time at cons these days talking to people anyway...

I saw the post about a few games of that being run ad hoc in the bar, hoping to play some myself.

Will be going, and wishing it wasn't so much more expensive than the other cons =(.

I'd recommend the Con X game, Paul's a great GM and I'm running one of the extra tables.

Well the other ones are ran on college campuses and don't have to cover the cost of hiring a venue and well K2 is dearer.

Excellent point, K2 is much more expensive. So much so, that I've never gone. And afaik Leprecon at least have to pay for their venue.

I used to play RPGs back in the 80s when I was was in school. Recently I've been tempted to try and get back into the hobby. Would going to Gaelcon be a good place to maybe find a group?

Almost certainly. You'll find representatives from gaming groups all across the country at a lot of conventions.

Hmmm, maybe. Missed the last two. Depends on an exciting mixture of work and finances. If I can only get to one before Christmas it'll be Dominicon (closer, cheaper, I always seem to play more games there) but hopefully I'll get to both.

I've been looking at the timetable on the Gaelcon website. There are a couple of games that interest me. How are the games run? I think I did go to the first or second Gaelcon. I don't remember playing any RPGs just some boardgames and 40K. I moved away from RPGs and into video games. I now regret selling most of my stuff in the early 90s. All I'm left with is the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay rules (is that still played?) and an AD&D players manual that's actually published by TSR!

There is usually a room per larp being run and a room full of tables for the rpgs.
You buy your event ticket and turn up in the room at the time the game is being ran.
Usually you are told which tables are for which game and the gm running the game will be at the table with the senario you take a seat and when the table is full the char sheets are passed out and you begin.

Would it be okay to join games that I've never played before?

Yes the gms are usually pretty good at including those who have not played before and are not used to those game systens.

There are at least three RPG systems I've learned at cons, it's one of the things I enjoy most. I even know someone who ran a game in a system he didn't know at a con.

*raises hand* I did that too.

Also changed the entire game world and scenario setting once for a con game too. We ran a game of SLA Industries once at a con myself and an old college buddy of mine we were both DM's and read the scenario ... didnt like how it ended so on the fly (while the game was being run) we re-wrote the end of the game between us.

    worked out rather well actually

    why thank you :D:D

although i must admit the idea to have you all shipped off the the war worlds and/or killed off was ed's idea. I just wanted you all to have your memories wiped.

still as con games go that was a darn fun one, other than of course the "be the bob" game of call of cuthulu we played in .... best con game i've EVER played.

I've been reading up on a few ofthe games that are mentioned on the Gaelcon site. Some of the look quite interesting. I used to play Call Of Cthulhu years ago and Cthulhutech looks very interesting. Anyone played it?

Nope but I am looking forward to trying it.

It's manga, essentially. The "cthulhu" is an excuse, as if any were needed, to include tentacles on the giant robots.

Heh heh - don't tell anyone but I used to do that regularly at cons! Thaedydal will tell you I'm a bit of a "seat of the pants GM" anyway... *grin* At one stage I was GMing six slots per Gaelcon >.< (I'm mental me)
