As I drove in this morning I heard about the following

laois - The N7 Dublin – Limerick Rd is closed both ways from 7am to 7pm until Thurs 9th Oct, from Clonad R/A to Borris In Ossory View Map
    Updated: 06/10/2008 16:13:56

The closure is from Clonad R/A (exit for the N8 Cork Rd on the Portlaoise Bypass) to Derrin Cross at Borris In Ossory. The diversion route will add 45/60mins to journey, so allow plenty of extra time. N7 southbound traffic will be diverted at the Clonad R/A on to the N8 Cork Rd to Durrow, turning right on to the R434 via Ballycolla and on through to Borris In Ossory at Derrin Cross. Diversionary route is vice versa for N7 northbound traffic. This closure is for emergency roadworks.

    What on earth !

The N7 is a really busy artirial road ,if there is emergency roadworks of this nature then it should be done overnight !

Does anyone know the nature of these works, and why they can't be carried out overnight ?

IMHO, there are too many fcuking idiots who cant drive in the dark on Irish roads, asking them to negotiate the narrow bending roads around Ballacolla where there are no cats eyes, proper road markings etc... would be more of a safety hazard than anything else.

Or, if it's not possible to do them overnight, why not from 09:30 to 16:30? That still gives you 6.5 hours ... allowing half an hour for lunch ;)

Madness !!! Could they not have waited until new N7 dual carraigeway is done before doing this resurfacing? Shutting down one of the countrys primary routes - only in Ireland.

    from http://www.laois.ie/Roads/RoadClosures/

    N7 Mountrath Road Closure
Laois County Council having given the required notice has now decided to close the N7 from Derrin Cross, Borris in Ossory to Togher Roundabout on the N7 at Portlaoise. The closure is necessary to allow for road rehabilitation and resurfacing through Mountrath.

It is intended to close this road for a period of 4 days from Monday 6th October to Thursday 9th October, 2008, from 7 am to 6 pm each day.

The following alternative route is available:

Southbound traffic – exit M7 at Togher Junction on Portlaoise Bypass, take the N8 as far as Durrow, take the R434 to Derrin Cross on the N7 near Borris-in-Ossory.

Northbound traffic – take R434 at Derrin Cross to Durrow, take N8 as far as Togher Junction on M7.

Appropriate signage will be in place to divert traffic. Details of Diversion routes are available for inspection at Aras an Chontae, Portlaoise; Western Area Office, Borris In Ossory, Co. Laois. Local access will be accommodated where possible.

Any queries regarding these closures may be directed to the Western Area Office, Laois County Council, Borris In Ossory, Co. Laois on 0505 41123.

    Any inconvenience caused is regretted.

I claim props on bringing this up here first!:

Anyhow, I think the reasoning on doing this now goes something like this:
Currently, the road through Mountrath is the N7, and as a National 'N' road is therefore the responsibility of the NRA, or at least the funding for the work is.
If Laois County Council wait until after the opening of the M7-M8 scheme, this road will revert to 'R' status (probably R445), and will become the sole responsibility of Laois CC.

Incidentally, for anyone that's interested, I got my hedges cut and a bit of earthworks done, jobs that are extraordinarily difficult when traffic is in full flow. :)

Yep - that would be the reason Rovi.

I think it's rather good that the road between Limerick and Nenagh is now properly surfaced (even if it is bendy with dodgy junctions) despite the new motorway going ahead.

It seems the same will not happen for the shocking surface between Nenagh and Roscrea, which is a pity. It's not any more likely to be fixed up when it becomes an R road.

Like most bypassed N roads it'll be a busy enough relatively important R road too.
