Following on from this thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055151405 and after much discussion on points in 2006 the following is this years table and Kerry are 6th lol! But in fairness they didn't win anything. Statistics has Galway 2nd because they won Connacht and finished 3rd in the league. Big drops for Donegal, Laois, Mayo and Roscommon. If Kerry are the 2nd best team in the land which most people would think they are, it begs the question are the provincial championships so devalued?
    Points are as follows:
Championship win: 8pts Championship draw 4pts.
Championship win after draw: 4pts Championship draw 4pts.
League Div 1 win: 4pts League Div 1 draw 2pts.
League Div 2 win: 3pts League Div 1 draw 1.5pts.
League Div 3 win: 2pts League Div 1 draw 1pts.
    League Div 4win: 1pts League Div 1 draw 0.5pts.

Bonus points: All-Ireland winners :36 pts
    Provincial winners:24 pts League winners:8pts.
So for 2008 (2007 in brackets).

    08 07 Team PTS
    1 ( 2 ) Tyrone 102
    2 ( 7 ) Galway 68
    3 ( 3 ) Dublin 64.5

    5 ( 4 ) Armagh 58.5
    6 ( 1 ) Kerry 52
    7 ( 15 ) Wexford 46
    8 ( 12 ) Westmeath 42
    9 ( 10 ) Derry 40

    19 ( 25 ) Leitrim 13
    20 ( 30 ) Wicklow 12
    20 ( 26 ) Clare 12
    22 ( 22 ) Cavan 11
    23 ( 14 ) Sligo 10
    24 ( 29 ) Tipperary 7
    25 ( 18 ) Offaly 6.5
    26 ( 23 ) Louth 6

The 5 year Rankings table seem more relevant using the same criteria:
    08 07 Team pts
    1 ( 1 ) Kerry 520.0
    2 ( 2 ) Tyrone 370.0

The 5 year table looks pretty accurate, although I think the provincial winners get a few too many points. Otherwise I think the scoring system is pretty good.

Thats a good points system Patmac. However,as always,I've chosen to go down the route of not doing things by points for wins etc. Here would be my rankings after this years All Ireland.I've taken this year (08) and last year (07) as the standard to base rankings with this year having more bearing on them. However, the win of provincial titles is a strong element also taken into account.

    1.Tyrone
    2.Kerry
    3.Cork
    4.Dublin
    5.Galway
    6.Armagh
    7.Mayo
    8.Wexford
    9.Monaghan
    10.Derry
    11.Fermanagh
    12.Westmeath
    13.Donegal
    14.Down
    15.Meath
    16.Laois
    17.Kildare
    18.Limerick
    19.Sligo
    20.Cavan
    21.Longford
    22.Offaly
    23.Louth
    24.Leitrim
    25.Roscommon
    26.Antrim
    27.Wicklow
    28.Clare
    29.Carlow
    30.Tipperary
    31.Waterford
    32.London
    33.New York
    34.Kilkenny

Dublin slip from 2nd to 4th after going from semi final to quarter final but don't slip too much after winning Leinster last year and this year while Cork move up in the rankings. While going from final to semi, they won Munster and drew with Kerry again and have a lot to build on for next year.Tyrone go 1st.Winning Ulster last year and Sam this year supports this while Kerry are 2nd for winning Sam last year. The loss of the league final, provincial final and All Ireland was too much of a hit for them to retain their place as best team.

Galway move up considerably. They went well in this championship winning Connaught back against a formidable and improved Mayo side and had the best game of the championship against Kerry in Croke Park in dreadful conditions.Armagh are up in the rankings for winning Ulster which is the most difficult province to win. They have won this province pretty consistently bar last year so this was weighted heavily.

Mayo used to be in the top 5 (06-07) but their lack of progression last year let them down. However, they reached the Connaught final this year and were the closest to beating All Ireland Champions Tyrone so they don't slip too much.Wexford have gone up a few places in the rankings to reach the top ten.No provincial title in donkeys years and the fact that they went out the next game after last years Leinster semi has held them back a bit.Definitely the most improved side in the country.

Other notable counties are last years semi-finalist Meath, last years Leinster finalist Laois and last years Connaught champions Sligo.Given the panel that Meath had, they should have retained last years form and made the Leinster Final to meet Dublin and go out in quarter final but they lost a 10 point lead in the Leinster quarter final against Wexford and lost by a point and then got hammered by Limerick.A one season wonder perhaps.Last year they were in the top ten.

Laois have dropped a few places. They have gone a step back in the province and have shown that after a defeat, they don't do well to come back but they have a very young team with a new young midfield that has big potential and a new forward (Kingston) that could be a target man alongside Munnelly.I expect them in the next two to three years to be back in a Leinster Final if somehow they get as good as they were from 03-05 with some new players.

I tried not to be too harsh on Sligo and ranked them 19th but the reality of it is that some teams below them would beat them such as Offaly,Roscommon and Antrim.I think it is inevitable that if they don't improve, they will find themselves ranked nearer to London (who beat them in the TM Cup)

Been a bit harsh on Tipp there BB - they won promotion from Div 4 and only beaten by limerick by 2pts - yet are 12 places behind Limerick and a few Div4teams ahead of them, come on we need all the help we can get :D

Blackbelt, you have Kildare 17th despite the fact they reached the AI quarter finals coming within a kick of a ball with drawing with Cork who are 3rd and comfortably beating Fermanagh who are 11th. Doesn't make sense to me.

www.gaainfo.com have a good ranking system based on the same formula for coefficients as FIFA use.

Yeah Blackbelt having Kildare at 17th stuck out to me, but overall the Top 18 are about right. You could argue over placings eg. Kildare and also Galway and Mayo being in the top 7 as it's easier getting to a Connacht or indeed a Munster Final. Maybe an extra weighting for reaching an Ulster or Leinster Final as although many will argue over the quality of football etc. they can't argue that it's more difficult to get to those Finals.

Franki Lee, Fermanagh are just way too low in 16th after beating Monaghan and Derry and drawing with Armagh.

A weighting for beating say a top 10 side or a top 18 side could be introduced but might make it a lot of work.

Armagh are also 11th and Donegal 7th, despite Armagh winning Ulster. The League isn't that important.

Overall, I'd say Blackbelts is the most accurate, though you could argue over a few positions.

Blackbelt...stick to the karate or judo or whatever cos you don't know a whole lot about football besides maybe the top 4 or 5 teams. Limerick hammered Meath and were unlucky against Cork yet are way below Meath..who by the way were dismal last year. Think yourself and K9 are from somewhere around Navan....will be another short year for yez lads :D
