i'm at my wit's end. my headphones always stop working a month or two after i buy them. it gets that i have to hold my mp3 player [goodmans, 4GB] in a certain way so that sound will come through BOTH HEADPHONES AT THE SAME TIME. i'm sick of wasting my money on the things, i don't know what i'm doing wrong with them! what causes this??

do you try them with other players to make sure it's not your goodmans?

That happened to a pair of mine. Think it was because I had the mp3 player in my pocket while cycling a lot and it was just putting too much strain on the jack.

Could it be something along the same lines with you?

How much did you pay for said earphones. In my experience and earphones under €30 won't last me more than 4 months max, I haven't spent less than €/$50 on earphones. It may be a bit extra for earphones but I use them everyday and haven't had a pair break in about 4 years!

If you've wrapped the headphones around the mp3 player or strained the connection where it plugs in the socket that connect to headphones may be damaged. Happened to mine before and it was a rip off to bother fixing it.

You could check the earphones with a different source, another player, PC, laptop, etc. If they're definitely broken and you seem to have to replace them often, just go for a pair of earphones with a good warranty. If they break down just bring them back to the shop for a replacement instead of wasting money.

Sennheisers for example, at least the model I got (OMX Sport 80 II) have a 2 year warranty. If they're made to suffer so much at the hands (ears!) of joggers and still carry such a warranty they should be fine for any casual user. :)

yes i do wrap my headphones. does that really cause so much damage? how else are you supposed to store them?

Dunno how much damage wrapping the cable does, I've always been doing it and I usually get a year out of my cheap headphones. I've been using the Philips 10 euro ones that hook behind the ear and I'd have them wrapped around my mp3 player, jogging with them in the rain, thrown in gym bags, forgotten in with smelly gym gear for a while etc.

They've been taking some abuse and I'm very happy with them, and I figure one year of use for 10 euro is pretty damn good value.

I bought Sennheisers to try them out, along with a new pair of Philips ones.
So time will tell how good or bad they are, but if you're in the market for a cheap pair of earphones that will take some abuse go for the Philips, I can't recommend them enough!

I'd recommend a pair of the Bose in ear ones - u can get em online or in their shop in the Dundrum town centre - the sound quality is good, and they last for ages! (mate had a pair for 2 years then they broke, the newer ones are manufactured differently so the part that broke on his won't go again). They are a 100 blips though which ain't exactly pocket change..

Just unplug the headphones after you wrap them.

It happened to my first zen where the jack broke and i kept having to fiddle around with it like you to get the sound right, then it eventually went completely.

the only way to go for portable mp3 headphones is the koss portapro. way cool 80s looks, incredible sound, cheap, stay on your head easily when exercising and LIFETIME WARRANTY. only downside is they obviously don't fold down so small. why use anything else when if these break in 2, 5 or 10 years koss will give you a new pair for free? they're recession-proof!
